Imus should've been fired just for being boring and that's all.
If Martin Luther King was alive today, do you think he'd rent 'White Chicks' ? :p CK |

It doesn't really have to get too down or gritty. Just a bit of discussion about race relations. It seems we make great leaps......much has changed in the last thirty years....but sometimes one stupid little remark brings it right back to square one. It makes me a sad newb:( |

This sounds a bit like the Ron Atkinson controversy in the UK, when 'Big, Racist' Ron declared a black footballer to be a "fucking lazy thick nigger" when he thought the microphone was off. Although hardly a commentator of any worth to begin with (his wheezy adoration of former club Manchester United is the abiding memory), there were many who seemed to leap to his defence for reasons best known to themselves ("Oh, he didn't mean it!", "He's not racist!" etc.).
The bottom line in all this is, famous people and people whose words are heard by millions have an obligation reflected in their pay packets to keep to acceptable standards - it makes sense that those standards include not using the characteristics of black women's hair to connect with prostitution. Even if this was intended for adult audiences only, there is no escaping the blatant use of directed racism in his insult. Only the ideallists would wave the whole thing away as an overreaction, because 'it's what he does'... but if this kind of thing is allowed to flourish and go unpunished, what kind of message does it send?

Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson are "Pimping the poor" . They are the reason why some folks find themselves in the situation that they are in.
White guilt needs to end. Blacks need to stop seeing themselves as victims all the time. Of course if they did then Al and Jesse wouldnt have jobs. Imus was an idiot for saying what he did. But he has a right to say it and should not have been fired for it. I get a little tired of people bowing down to emotional hysteria.

It isn't hysteria, it's a line being crossed and the public and commercial reaction to it.
People obviously don't like racism broadcast to millions. Imus did have a right to say it, but he should have been fired for it. Politicians and campaigners will always seize the opportunity to jump on bandwagons and gain support, but this does not change the facts of the matter.

The biggest problem I have with it is Sharpton and Jackson. Jackson shows up at the White House to console Clinton after his scandal and brings his mistress along while it seems we've all forgotten about Sharpton and Tawana Brawley; these people act like saints and live like sinners. Like meethecreeper said, if there were no racists these two would not have jobs. All they do is drive a wedge further between the races. As for Imus, he has the right to say whatever he wants but the people who pay him for his services have every right to disagree with what he says and send him packing.

C'mon brother racism is spewed out everday on television and radio by people from all races. Problem is its only called racism when white people do it. If a black man does it on stage its called entertainment. although he is not black look at Carlos Mencias show. For the most part every skit he does could be called racist. But I dont see whites, latinos, asians, arabs and etc. protesting comedy central. Its just my opinion but I think the majority of people in the world think emotionally and not logically. Maybe the next time I hear a black comic make jokes about white people I'll jump on the bandwagon and scream racism too.
