The first season of the M-TV series Teen Wolf makes its debut on DVD and I saw the whole thing, all in one shot. Not the best idea I ever had… It's a fun, lightweight series, but is best as a weekly episodic experience, meant to be taken in small-sized bites. I was hanging in there pretty good until about episode four, when "high school, hormones and howling at the moon" fatigue started to set in. Still, I recommend the show.
Teen Wolf stars Tyler Posey as Scott an impossibly good-looking, ripped, intelligent "shy loser" (yeah, sure…) who gets bit by a werewolf, becomes one himself, and then must find others of his kind in order to survive suburbia as a shape-shifter.

In case anyone remembers the 1985 film Teen Wolf (or even, gasp! way back to the 50s, when I Was A Teenage Werewolf came out), this series is nothing like that. It's along the lines of The Vampire Diaries or The Gates. More soap than snarls, the series rises above the conventions of the genre thanks to a great kick start by veteran director Russell Mulcahy, who is best-known for his big-budget feature films The Highlander and Resident Evil: Apocalypse. Show runner Jeff Davis, whose previous credits include the ever-popular network TV procedural Criminal Minds, brings yet another sort of aspect to the show. The unfolding mystery, action sequences, and the cinema-caliber CGI (especially in episode one), elevate the show beyond what one might expect from an M-TV original.
The 12 episode first season has a good arc, with some sweet love scenes and cool cliffhangers; the DVD collection includes all of the episodes, along with commentaries on select episodes, as well as other special features listed below. On the pilot episode, you can choose between commentary from Mulcahy and Davis (standard fare, but nicely informative), or members of the cast (goofy fun, good insight to the actors' inherent likeability).
