The latest "Alone in the Dark"

While I've got a great amount of respect for this series and its roots (Never played the original 3, just one of the earlier PS1 titles and the PS2 one) and the scary feel they seem to evoke, I have to say up until this point, there's always been SOME scene that pisses me off and stops me playing...invincible bat thing in library, anyone?
They've looked like a great series of games, and always given me that feeling a good horror/thriller outing ought to...one thing I admire (not sure if this applies to the earlier series or not) is that they've made the games follow only loose continuity, each new game doesn't seem to have related directly to the one before it - this is good, as it allows new players to jump in without having to have played every game before it. Keeps things fresh, and the new one definately seems to have done that.

So I downloaded the demo for the latest one simply titled "Alone in the Dark".
Not sure why the ps store (AU) took so long to get this one, as I recall the game came out a few months ago, no?
Either way...
Edward Carnby, again. Although you seem to have lost your memory, I'm assuming later on in the storyline things will come together as to how and why...the demo has you waking up, shaking off a groggy effect by "blinking" and stumbling into a conversation taking place among the "bad guys" half way through. Sooo...they're gonna kill you...and then things get crazy.
Things attacking and killing them from the dark, weird organic type cracks growing over everything...building literally falling down around you.
Good stuff, GREAT atmosphere.
Very inventive weapons system which basically allows combinations of items, weapons and fire, through both first and thirsd person views. Heh, you can drag bodies into fire to burn 'em...I smashed someone up with a pc monitor and went to work with an axe. Hoo, fun.
The tried a driving mission which was very smoothe and well done...where this entity is practically ripping up the earth chasing after you.
Spooky CRAZY stuff...This is a complete reinvention of the series.

I honestly think this will be among the best horror games this gen.
Check out the demo at least if you haven't yet.
I actually wanna get this.

I was dissapointed in the demo, the controls felt sloppy and the visuals were a bit unpolished. I'll have to borrow it from a friend and try it, especially after all the HORRIBLE reviews.

Played the PS2 version that came out about 6 months ago. Pure crap, both graphics and gameplay.

But the game for PS3 that has just come out should have got a much needed makeover. Haven't tried out the demo yet tho.

Wait, so the PS2 and ps3 version aren't the same?
Is the storyline about the "cracks" in the ps2 thing?
Starts out with you "waking up"?
Hm...
I know the LAST one on ps2 (new nightmare) pissed me off...

Yea, you wake up drugged or something. Then you have to escape the burning building. Then the underground parking with the "Zombies". Then the annoying car chase. Then escaping south central (Sold the game not long into that chapter). What bugged me the most was the lousy graphics all the way, not to forget all the wonderful pixel errors. And the fact that you can't save the game whenever you feel like it, but have to wait for freakin check-points, was driving me to tears.

The New Nightmare... that one i actually liked. :D

And to actually answer you question, yes the story in PS3 is more or less the same as the Ps2, but with a few changes for the better here and there. And of course the graphics on 3 must be better. It HAS to be. But again, haven't played the PS3 demo yet, so i really can't say anything for sure.

Check it out...it might be different, I mean it could just be me but I was quite impressed with what I saw in the PS3 version - I was thinking, if there's a ps2 version I'm not sure how they'd remotely be able to produce something anywhere near as good...

I remember reading that the PS2 version doesn't use the dynamic fire and you don't end up with the same "cool" factor from one of the game's biggest selling points.

Wow. Mixed reviews. Phalanx - You're the first one that I've heard give it an outstanding review. Maybe if I can find it used on Amazon, I'll pick it up. I've been looking forward to this game for a while, but most of the reviews of it are so so (particularly for the controls and weapons play).

Let me know how you like it if you wind up picking up the actual game. I might grab it for the 360.
