Technology

I think i may have made a thread like this a while back, but i figured it could use a new beginning if i did.

What do you think of/hope for from technology? Technology has been both celebrated and hated since the industrial revolution. While it is responsible for a lot of what is wrong today (our dependency on oil, some really frightening weapons, etc), I think it will eventually come full circle and bring things in harmony with the worl around us. Here is my thought, without the pollution and environmental damage of the past 200 years, we would not have advanced to where we are in all forms of technology, and as a direct result, the philosophy in general governing the creation of new technologies has been to make things more "green", environmentally friendly. So in the next century, a lot of the damage that has been done will most likely be undone or healed.

Its been said before, we are a minor inconvenience on the very surface of this planet, to think we will be remembered in a million years is arrogant, we just arent that important. We dont need to clean things up for the "world", we need to do it for OUR survival, not the world's. Species will become extinct, that is the way things work. We are responsible for several extinctions, and that is sad, but we just sped up the inevitable in those cases. Rarely has a healthy population been eradicated through mankind's efforts, although it has happened.

Pontificating aside, i think most modern and future technology is exciting and I want to knwo what areas you all find interesting and what your hopes are for them.

Personally, I am stoked for things like wind farms and tidal power. Inexhaustable energy will make life much easier and less expensive.

ANother technology i saw mentioned a few years back was "spray on" tvs. Some clever people made what are essentially nano-leds that can be held in a solution and sprayed on a surface, and when they attach a little receptical to the surface, it worked just like an lcd screen on a computer. They also have paper-thin screens which look like the GPS computer thingies they had in Red Planet.

A lot fo the writing i have done has been sci-fi because i love the thought of what could be accomplished in the future with a little imagination.

The future belongs to nanotech, as I already said in the other thread also. Everything will be small, and go smaller.

We are in for a tech-explosion within the next 10-12 years.

here's the timeline for me and technology:

- The LED watch. my grandfather had one - i HAD to have it.

- The sony walkman. absolutely blew me away

- the computer and the internet. (my keys to the kingdom ... music, movies, porn, you name it.

- Sony PSP ... my favorite of all the hand-helds. versitile and ergonomiically beautiful.

the future ? i want man to make it to mars and really find something there.

also - i want to be able to transfer my brain to the body of a younger (better looking) guy once i'm 90 or so years old. and keep doing it forever.

shitty technology : the cell phone.

good in emergencies only. any other use of it should be criminalized

To make the world a better place the big advances need to come in society- not technology.

We need to pay people twice as much for doing half the work so more people can be employed and still have time to enjoy their lives and the fruits of technology.

Also everyone needs to stop having to have one of everything- their own car, their own copies of the latest dvds, the latest music...

With technology as it is we really don't need to own those things to enjoy them whenever we want to.

These changes in attitude would cut down so much on consumption, pollution, traffic, etc.

there have been some interesting societal shifts in the recent few years. Big corporations are still soul sucking monstrosities, but they on some level understand that keeping their employees happy is one of the keys to success. Working for fidelity sucked, it really makes you feel unimportant when you are a number and your boss doesn't have time to answer any question, ever.

However, they had free coffee stations everywhere, most managers had a cube with the rest of the team, MANY steps were taken to make the employees feel like people and to allow them time to have a life.

They failed miserably, but they tried, at least.

technology makes aspects of life easier, and if it can make them cheaper, then maybe we'll see a reversal of inflation.
