Vampire Novels
Anne Rice Is just a little too "Harlequin" for me...I'm not into all that romance crap...I want my horror to be horrifying...I leave my Vampire reading pleasure in the capable hands of those such as Stephen King and Ramsey Campbell...Give me blood, guts, and gore or at least some "creepy"...Not all this love, swooning, sighs and "eternal longing" sappy shit...How about you guys? You like this stuff?

My two favorite vamp novels are McCammon's They Thirst and King's Salem's Lot.
Does anyone read those Necroscope books? Opinions?

Hi everyone, I'm new here. Came into this thread specifically to post McAmmon's "They Thirst" Really psyched to see that it was already here. McAmmon is THE most underrated horror writer ever......

And one cannot forget Matheson's I Am Legend , my personal favorite vampire novel.
As for Rice, not a huge fan either. I think she is a reasonably capable writer when she wants to be, but too often she gets caught up in listening to the sound of her own voice. (Of course, I would level that same criticism at ol' Stevie boy.)

If you can get your hands on it, John Polidori's "The Vampyre," is the father of most modern (note that I did not say all) novels. I've said it before, but Bram took more inspiration from this novel and it's subject Lord Ruthven (read Lord Byron) than Vlad Tsepes....or at least that's what a lot of literary folk (myself included although I'm a small literary person) think. Anyway, it's not a great read in that it's typical Romantic era conveluted grammar and flowery language, but it's a nice book to have on your "vampire shelf."
I appreciated this thread, Rayne, because I like seeing the vamp books available. You and Avenger need to discuss McAmmon's merits as I am uninitiated.:)

Yeah avaenger, take my reco on necroscope, DEFINATELY!
For anyone who wants to know, I may be a little rusty here, but I'll try to explain what goes on. It's about this dude (called frank, if memory serves?) who's some kinda psychic, and can contact the dead, and, well, "uses" his thang to track vampires, and kill 'em I never read the first one, but I have the feeling some of his family mighta been wiped out by the vamps, 'cos he sure seems to hate them. There's like more than 10 books in the series, all quiet long, and they have a "spin-off" series about his two sons, but I didn't get into those much yet. The books r very descriptive in the gore factor too...they're great. I once saw a tv show called "kindred: the embraced", heard it was based on a book, and a series of games...I quiet liked the series, any info, anyone?
