Three...Extremes on Sundance
It looks like Three...Extremes is showing on the Sundance Channel. I haven't seen this one yet, so I can't recommend it. Still, those of you who have Sundance might want to catch it.

"Dumplings" was okay, but after you find out what the "ingredient" is, it drags. "Cut" I totally hated because it was so boring. You'd think torture would be somewhat interesting, but I had to fastforward through it. "Box" was pretty good and had the most potiential, but I didn't like the ending and thought it was inconsistent and totally random, compared with the rest of the story. If it's on TV, then you might want to watch, just to see it if you have time and you're really interested. I wouldn't spend money on buying the DVD or anything. |

I recorded it, but the recording was messed up after Dumplings so that was the only one I got to see. I thought it was very disappointing.

I thought Cut was the best of the three while Box was dragged out and seemed very tame for a Miike film. Am I the only one who thought he was REALLY holding back? I don't expect every Asian film to be filled with crazy scenes and a copious amount of gore but I do expect it from Miike. Dumplings worked well but I think I liked the full version of that one better.

I think my problem with Dumplings was that I didn't find it scary. I understand that they were going for the gross-out effect, but I rarely find that to be a suitable replacement for scares in a horror flick.

I agree with Despare. Cut was my favorite, I thought it was very visually pleasing. Dumplings was slow but left a profound effect on me for a movie that didn't show much. I didn't mind box, though it definately seems to be the least favorite of the three for most people.

I know this is an old thread, but I really enjoyed this one. I thought it was really interesting to watch how the cultural differences between the Chinese, Korean, and Japanese made some of the more traditional Asian horror features take on a little different connotation. I was surprised as a huge Miike fan, that I didn't like Box as much. To me it just felt like he went in with the intention of blowing the other offerings out of the water with his usual stunning cinematography and visuals and just left the flow of the story out. Dumplings was, for me, by far the most interesting of the lot.
Just a note, Three Extremes II, nowhere near as good, in my opinion. Where this one left me going...extreme?! the second one was not even close to extreme on anyone's list. At least the first one had some provocative ideas. As usual, Asian horror will always leave the gorehounds wanting more because the subtlety doesn't always bridge the gap, but even people who like the ethereal, other world type will be disappointed in the second one. |

Just a note, 3 Extremes (The Wheel, Memories, Going Home) was actually the first, even though I believe it was released in America as 3 Extremes II. It was made two years before 3...Extremes.

You know, that actually makes more sense to me. Thanks for the heads up. I never paid attention to the production dates on those. |
