horror coming to an end?
where has all the good horror gone to? i was just flipping thrugh the horror pages of play and i just noticed how utterley few of the new horror movies out there are even worth watching, the ring was good... but before that the last worthwhile horror movie i can remember is house on haunted hill. i mean im not saying its all bad im just saying that ever since the brilliance of friday the 13th and nightmare on elm street 90% of the movies have just been another badley made clone after another, so now scream has 2 sequels, i know what you did last summer was the same movie and the same goes for urban legend... halloween starts throwing in people like ll cool j... and besmudging the name of jaws they did the same with deep blue sea. do i even have to mention jack frost? the breed?
its like the whole genre gets worse and worse each passing day and all the movies are just low grade rip offs of eachother... we still have some good modern horror though, blair witch project, house on haunted hill, jeepers creepers, the ring and so on... what happened to the good old ones like the thing, nosferatu, it and all the other goodies? whats it all coming to? well... i just felt the need to rant violentley about this.

I wouldnt say that Horror is coming to an end as we know it, it is just evolving into something that most real horror fans cant stand. I Know what you did last summer, Final Destination, Scream, all designed to appeal to a new audience. One that doesnt want to deal with gore or a plot that takes a brain to figure out what is going on. Its all about the money money money, I think the art of the horror film has been lost in some circles. Thats why they make sequel after sequel after sequel. Also things like political correctness get in the way, everybody is afraid of offending someone w/ their films. I cant believe that mountain people werent out protesting the movie Wrong Turn. Plus things like CGI have made film making so much more easier and thus in turn less believeable to the likes of us. Jason X comes to mind, the CGI blood I could do without, it really bored me, does a 5 gal bucket of food colored water really cost that much or is it just 2 much 2 clean up these days. Or have some actors become premadonnas and dont want to get dirty while filmmaking. I was hoping that since Sam Raimi has shown what he can do with a huge budget like Spiderman that maybe someone will give him the money to make an Evil Dead 4. I heard that John Carpenter has wanted to get out of film making for various reasons, and Wes Craven has been kind of disappointing of late. I have to say I think that we are going to be relying on Indie filmmakers for a while until the money stops rolling in for the BS that is coming out now. One thing that I didnt mention is that I think it is increasingly hard these days to scare people, you can see more violence and gore on the nightly news now than in any horror film.

saying its coming to an end was a bit extreme maby... i like exagurating... pox upon thee arnold for teaching me bad english!
but its going thrugh its own little ragnarock or drastic change if you will, that il agree to. compared to alot of people on this site i realy dont know jack about horror but all the scream clones are getting a bit booring. but like you say i guess what its all boiling down to is the money, find something that works and milk it then milk it some more and keep on going till its bone dry. good horror doesnt realy have to scare me, it just needs a good solid story and a little suspence, is it realy that hard to come up with something like that? i know i couldnt but there are alot of smart guys into movie making out there, someone should just knock theyr heads together and make em think a little. as for evil dead 4 though... wishfull thinking, but lets hold on to hope where hope lies dying.

Where have the good ol' days gone
Honestly, I think you're both right on the money. The new slasher flicks are for the new teen movie goers. However the anticipation of Scream (absolute shit, in my opinion) will NEVER compare to the suspense of Halloween or Nightmare on Elm Street. I mean, remember the scene when Nancy's in class, there's a dude reading Shakespear, and she sees Tina standing there in the body bag??? That was fucking brilliant. Scared the shit outta me.
I think Horror as a genre is making waves in the video game industry. Unfortunately we will never see a terrifying Final Fantasy:p (Now that would be funny...and please note the sarcasm), but we do get games like Resident Evil, Silent Hill, oh and American McGee's Alice... When is an asylum not creepy? (Oh, probably in movies like Gothika....how do you spell disapointment).

I felt the same way as you during the 90's. I think the new trend in horror is something I'll like though. This years trend was old school all the way. Wrong Turn was an ode to the Hills Have Eyes but showed us some things we had never seen before (treetop chase). Cabin Fever (I know most of you hated it, bear with me) was an ode to Evil Dead and it had an original spin. Ho1000C was an ode to TCM, but had an original spin on it. It seems we are paying homage to the 70's while still making original films. I'm looking forward to what 2004 brings.
