Let's make this clear once and for all

In a previous thread, I stated that I had just seen the TCM remake, and that I'd preferred it to the original, I did however NOT say at any time that the remake was better. Perhaps I prefer it because it was more gorier (in my view at least) or even that there was at least an attempt to show some background to the Leatherface story. Yes I agree there was no wheelchair, or geriatric trying to hit the victim with a hammer or even any hint of cannabilism in the story, but the point was that the film was "remade", perhaps to give it a new slant on an old story.

And I agree there are some cases where a remake is simply unnecessary eg psycho (a complete remake, scene for scene but this time in colour).

There have been a number of films in the past which are not called remakes but often are - e.g. the numerous Dracula, Werewolf and Mummy legends, each purporting to be the definite "true" story, but are simple retelling (again) of the same old tale.

Again even in this modern era how many horror films can be classed as original, e.g look at the slasher film - killer chases girl, killer cannot be killed by bullets, fire, electrocution, drowning etc, eventually girl beats killer, only for "shock, horror, " killer gets up for the sequel, are those not remakes, but with the name changed.

I am not particularly in favour of remakes, but as mentioned before how many original films can you name (that haven't been done before) very few; and also remember Tobe Hooper was involved in the remake of TCM (it was his baby after all) so good luck to him.

I am not defending the remake of TCM or the countless number of remakes over the past few years - The Hills Have Eyes, The Ring or King Kong for that matter, but as one person who replied in my original thread - that they had no problem in remakes if it makes the viewer want to see the original, I agree whole-heartedly.

I (lke the majority of others in this forum) have been brought up on a regular diet of horror films - ranging from the classic universal monsters, hammer, through to halloween and beyond so I do have some idea what I am talking about ; everbody has their own opinion, I do not expect every body to agree with mine, you make think this thread is a load of bullshit, but again as in another thread (where a forum member commented on the number of people who post on nothing but the picture thread) at least I am making some form of attempt and if this thread makes your blood boil so much, smoke come out of your keyboard as you type, then so much the better.

Okay, I'm not really. For what it's worth, I liked the TCM remake too. I certainly don't think it's better than the original, but I thought it was a decent remake. So many people have this knee jerk reaction to remakes, like "It's not the original, it's disrespectful and must be a terrible movie. I'm going to judge it harshly even though I haven't seen it and have no intentions of doing so." To me, that's pretty silly. I probably would prefer it if there were less remakes being made, but it's not a problem I have with the remakes themselves. I just wish that more filmmakers would take a chance and show some originality. As long as the remake does justice to the original, and can be seen as a decent film in its own right (see Hills Have Eyes, The Ring etc.) then I'm all for it.

Don't worry so much about what other people think of your posts. You have just as much a right to your opinion as they do to theirs.

You know, since horror is a "genre" who gives a shit what kind of movies within it's scope people like. It doesn't reflect upon you as a fan of horror. I used to like the gory slasher films, and there are some people that think "gory slasher films" are what horror is all about. Personally, I don't.

Horror, to me, brings to mind those things that frighten us, and that's the type of "horror" film that I like to watch. Of course, it's hard to find a film that actually frightens me, because (A) I'm an adult, and (B) Nobody's been that creative, yet (in my mind, anyway). However, I'm enjoying the attempts. So, I'm willing to accept "creepy."

A lot of people on the forum think that The Ring was a joke, but Vod and I agree that it was great film. It was very creepy in many ways, including, but not limited to, the story, the ambience, the characters, and so forth. I also felt that Ju-on The Grudge was pretty creppy for the same reason, however, many people disagree.

Go with it, babe. You watch what you like. I think that it's interesting to go see remakes just to see what they've done with the film: what twists they've added to the plot, how they've nuanced the "modern" world with the story, etc. If it doesn't work, it doesn't work, but it's an iteresting comparisson to make.

Personally, I think people go to "remade" movies in the wrong frame of mind in the first place. I say, watch the original, and then go with the attitude "I wonder if the new movies' take will capture the same feeling or not?" Because that's what you want..."that feeling."

*Just as a little note before I get to the rest of this post...I liked the TCM remake too. It doesn't replace the original for me. BUT, here's the thing, the simple fact is, the TCM remake SCARED THE CRAP OUT OF ME when I saw it and I may never watch it again becaise I thought it was so creepy and unpleasant. I thought that it was almost unbearably unpleasant and I was sitting in the theatre just waiting for it to end--not because it was bad, but because it was TOO EFFECTIVE at what it was trying to do. I agree with one opinion I heard about this film, that a lot of reviewers panned it mainly because they were ashamed to admit that for once, a horror movie had DONE ITS JOB and rattled their brains a little.* Nufsed.

On to the main point of this post, though...jeez, you don't have to apologize for liking a movie! Heck...if everyone liked the same movies and hated the same movies, there would be no need to make as many movies as we make. Think about it!










But if someone criticizes my beloved PHANTASM, I will speak up and say, very loudly, that PHANTASM IS NOT A POO NUTS MOVIE!!!!!!!!!!
