Question What Comes After DVD's?

I am in the process of building up my (largely horror) DVD collection over the past several months. The question that I have is what happens when DVD's go the way of VHS tapes? Or will DVD's ever go "out"? I'm only asking this because it's kinda depressing to spend all this money on DVD's and then need to replace them in a new medium in five years...

Well, VHS was around for quite a while. So just enjoy your current collecting habits and don't worry about it! :)

Now, Beta, that's another story.

You know I've pondered the same thing...probably anyone that collects dvd's has and I've concluded "F@#k it".

I mean why bother there's always going to be a "latest and greatest" and at this point I've invested hundreds of dollars in my dvd collection(forget vhs)and I'm not about to trade them in and begin anew.

I should think the next logical progression in home viewing entertainment would be something on the order of a hologram or virtual reality(like Minority Report) on a disc or cube er something.

Well, now it seems DVD's are splitting into 2 formats; HD DVD and Blue ray. Does this mean we will have to update our collections? I don't know yet. I haven't looked into it yet but another war is on the horizon.

Rumour had it that the HD-DVD and Bluray players will be backward compatible with normal DVD's, so I really dont care. I'll keep buying DVDs until HD or Bluray takes over, then I'll just get a good machine for those. Case closed.

It doesn't really matter to me if they go away or not shortly (or, as the looks of it, get upgraded). I'm still (and always will) collecting both DVD's and VHS's. As long as I got the movie I wanted, then I'm happy.

Hats off to the last poster.

With some film buffs, it seems the format and presentation of the movie is the most important factor. Style over substance - gimme extras and special edition rerereleases!

Most of my films are on VHS - rather than upgrade to DVD (:O), I'd rather buy new films with the money. New experiences - not the same old ones repackaged to be hip.

The industry is heading tapeless, where films will be saved to memory (computer that is, not human - that's a few hundred years down the line. Don't worry I've been there).

Most of my movie collection is consisted of VHS tapes too. I too don't care about the special features or rereleases and what not. I mean, if I have a DVD (which I do), I'll eventually watch the special features when I find the time. But, it's not a rushing matter for me. Hell, most of the time the special features suck anyway! I'm in it for the movie, and the movie only!
