Help needed/film title (Experiment?)

Hi all!

Need help with title, see scenario below:
It's about a scientist that are using a sound proof water tank for investigating the primal sences in the human brain. If remember right he turned out to a monkey (gorilla?) or some kind of pre-historic man at the end of the movie.
Would guess it's from the mid 80-s but unsure of this.
I think it was called something like "...Experiment..." but this might also be untrue information (it's not the German movie called Das Experiment from 2001!)

it is a good movie .. might seem a bit dated now but it was pretty cool at the time ..

It's not Altered States, it's a similar movie from Italy called "Sensory Deprivation Tank: The Movie" and it starred John Saxon, Silvia Tortosa and Hugo Stiglitz.
