Baseball Bat Abortion
Aborted Baby Buried In Backyard Of Richmond Township Teen's Home
A 16-year-old Richmond Township girl who allegedly allowed her boyfriend to hit her in the stomach with a baseball bat to abort her unborn baby may face criminal charges after police this week dug up a 4-month-old fetus in her back yard. Macomb County Prosecutor-elect Eric Smith said Tuesday he will wait for the results of an autopsy to determine whether to charge anyone with causing the 16-year-old Armada High School student to have a miscarriage and then burying the fetus in her back yard on Armada Ridge road near 32 Mile Road. State Police Sgt. Gary Nesbitt said the miscarriage occurred when the girl became too scared to tell her parents of the pregnancy and she and her boyfriend decided on their own to terminate the pregnancy. Nesbitt said the boy and girl tried to abort the child by pounding the girl's stomach with a baseball bat. Nesbitt said the attempt to kill the fetus lasted for two weeks. "At this time we don't know if the pounding with the baseball bat aborted the fetus or not," Nesbitt said. "We don't know how long she was pregnant or if it is a natural abortion." "We will wait until the medical examiner gives us the cause of death and age of the unborn child," Smith said. "Clearly, some disturbing things happened here. The disturbing facts appear to rise to the level of criminal behavior. "The length they went to do this is shocking," he added. State Police Sgt. Pat Young, the detective in charge of the investigation, said the boy involved lives with his parents in the village of Armada. When the fetus was finally aborted, a member of her family allegedly called a local hospital to see what they should do with the fetus, Young said. They said they were told they could bury the fetus in their yard, he added. Armada High School Principal Michael Darga said he first heard of the bizarre incident when he overheard students talking at school Tuesday morning. He said the students didn't know the name of the students involved. "I've heard all kind of rumors, but that's all they are," Darga said. "The police haven't contacted us and I don't even know at this time who the students are." Neighbor Audrene Hudechek said she has lived next door to the girl's family for the last 10 years. She said they are very nice people who are extremely friendly and giving. "They would do anything for you," Hudechek said. "Kids do stupid things, and I think they did this because they were really scared. It's heartbreaking." Nesbitt said state police were informed of the burial by an anonymous call. State police investigators started digging in the back yard on Armada Ridge after Young obtained a search warrant signed by 41-1 District Judge Denis Leduc. A cadaver dog was called upon to assist in finding the fetus, Nesbitt said.
