I agree with you. I've always thought that the less you know about the monster, the scarier it is. I think it was real, but this movie wasn't trying to tell a story about a demon; it was trying to tell a story about a mother and her child.

If memory serves me correctly (and it rarely does), wasn't there some weird tie-in with the dead father?

Yes Bloofer. The father's spirit was a pawn serving the Babadook.

Asami is amazing in this. This movie has one of the most sickly creepy bad guy put on film. Eww.

Well, yes, but I do think he was a portal or pawn as Michael said. But I supposed that could be construed as a metaphor also. I'm of the mind that the Babadook was real..
