The Slenderman
Hello everyone, I just wanted to know everyone's opinion about Slenderman and his capacity to be a truly terrifying movie monster. I love the psychological aspects of the character and find that to be much more scary than your typical hack and slash villian. Me and a few friends recently made a video in which we tried to film a "found footage" Slenderman story that you're free to check out as well. I'd love to hear your opinions about the character and the video, thanks!

Well, the slenderman is certainly a hot topic these days, and I can tell you from personal knowledge, there are a LOT of people working on projects with this character, comics, fiction, movies, so your instincts are right.
As for your film, I found it pretty average. The people are not very interesting, they don't do anything interesting, they don't say anything interesting, and the glimpses of the slenderman are not very convincing. He's not tall or thin. It just looks like a guy wearing a white mask. The audio inserts are not done very well- they don't sound like they're part of the footage as well, but sound like bad effects added later. And the sound of the motor in the one vehicle is really annoying and loud. Sorry to sound so negative, but I'm sure you'd find honest feedback more useful than just saying "cool film, man." |

Thanks a lot for the feedback. I do appreciate the honest response and will hopefully be able to improve upon things in the future. I'd never tried anything like this before and didn't really know what to include in a "found footage" movie but there's always next time. And yeah I do need better equipment and effects all the way around, but that's what you get with a zero dollar budget haha.

I really agree with NE - Also, I kept wondering "Where are they going and why is it scary?" It just seemed random that they rocked up to someone's empty house. Also, the lined paper signs weren't very successfully ominous. Neither were the drawings, and typically that stuff can be truly creepy. Why would they just disregard them if we as the audience are suppose to time them scary? Maybe one of the actors should react to them, in concern or fear.
The sound needed work, especially when they were riding over to the camp and at one point, was Picture-in-Picture on? It was distracting. Slenderman's a great, creepy topic but this did not build mood for me. Good luck with future projects! |

The guy whose house they went to at the beginning- it was his grandfather or uncle's house or something.

Ah, yes, Slendy. Got to love the game.
The problem is, as Neverending stated, there are LOADS of Slenderman projects out there at the moment. MarbleHornets, as far as I know, was the first, and did a pretty good job of it (although it got too complex). The issue is, there's nothing to make yours stand out. All of the ones I've seen are either documentaries or "found footage". Whilst I understand it's quite nice for low-budget indie pics in regards to quality and technology, it's just a bit...well, lazy. These days at least. Anyone can go out to the woods under the guise of some contrived situation and set up scenes where we glimpse the figure. Oddly enough, what would be most original in regards to a Slenderman film would be traditional story telling! You can still make it creepy. I mean, there are two common pitfalls of Youtube found-footage films that you've fallen into. 1) The Framing of the film So the explanation for you putting up this footage is that your brother is missing and you just want him to be found. In the message at the beginning you simply refer to a mysterious figure - this is fair enough, I guess. Yet you call the film "Tales of Slender...Slenderman Found Footage." Would someone who's primary aim is to find their missing brother give it a title like this? This is why Marble Hornets was so clever. The channel name, the video titles - they were all simple and believable. Believability is the key to making found footage scary. 2) Assuming adlib makes it realistic. It's easy to think "No script, just rough guidelines - this will free people up and make their lines authentic." It takes skill to improvise well. What often happens is your actors feel so pressured to always say something that they fill every second with repetitive, meaningless, boring dialogue. It can also impede their delivery, making it dull and emotionless. I appreciate that some effort went into this film, but the sad truth is that you're a bit late. It hasn't nothing to make it stand out from all of the other woodland-set Slenderman found footage films on Youtube (think that sounds specific? Exactly.)
