"The Black Room" (1935)
-Boris Karloff Plot: IMDB Prophecy has it that younger twin Anton will kill brother Gregor in the castle's Black Room. Anton returns to the castle after a 10 year hiatus. Gregor, a Baron, has many attempts on his life as his subjects detest his tyranny. However, good natured Anton earns the subjects' respect, and the admiration of Col.Hassel, uncle of the beautiful Thea. When Gregor kills young servant Mashka, his subjects storm the castle to remove him. Devious Gregor renounces his title in favour of brother Anton to appease them. He then kills Anton to assume his identity and the Baronship again. He is free to pursue Thea with Col.Hassel's blessing. When Col.Hassel discovers Gregor's impersonation, he also meets death. With Thea's true love, Lt. Lussan, wrongfully convicted of Hassel's murder, it appears nothing can stop evil Gregor from ambushing her into marriage. But what of that prophecy? Phantom's Review: Twice the Karloff..Twice the joy of seeing a truly great actor work. One of his best films, creepy, atmospheric and wonderfully acted. This is a classic thriller. |

"The Land Unknown" (1957)
-Jock Mahoney Plot: IMDB On a naval expedition to Antarctica, three men and reporter Maggie Hathaway crash-land in a crater 1000 m below sea level. There, they encounter steamy tropical forest, dinosaurs, carnivorous plants, and human footprints, as Maggie's clothes become more and more abbreviated. Phantom's Review: Fun, corny sci-fi "B" movie. Former stunt man Jock Mahoney is fine as the heroic lead. Plenty of action and some half way decent dinosaurs. If your expecting a "Jurassic Park" style of FX, then forget about it , but if you enjoy these great little monster movies from the '50's then sit back and have some fun. -- |

"Curse Of The Undead" (1959)
-Micheal Pate, Eric Fleming Plot: IMDB western with a twist: mysterious gunslinger-for-hire Drake Robey is really a vampire, and it's up to Preacher Dan to save the town and girlfriend Dolores Carter. Phantom's Review: A Halloween staple for me. While this is definitely a "B" movie, I absolutely love this film. Very underrated in my opinion. I'm a devoted fan of both westerns and horror and whenever the two genres meet I'm interested, unfortunately most of the time when this happens, it's pretty bad (remember "Billy The Kid Vs Dracula") but this time they got it right. Western vets Eric Fleming and Micheal Pate do good jobs as the town preacher and the black clad mysterious gunslinger. Some spooky music and a lot familiar faces in the supporting cast make this a little gem -- |

"Godzilla, King Of The Monsters" (1956)
-Raymond Burr Plot: A 400 foot tall fire breathing radioactive monster rises from the ocean and precedes to stomp Tokyo to shit Phantom's Review: First and arguably, the best in the long running series. Even the American re-edited version is great to watch. Beautifully filmed, excellent miniature FX and, of course, the coolest giant monster in history. A classic -- |
