Are zombies mass-marketed to us?

A very interesting article I came across -

http://www.popmatters.com/pm/column/...undead-tropes/

Makes for a contemplative read, specially when the writer is drawing parallels with a human's innermost desires. No wonder our fascination with the creatures has increased with the progress of time.

It's an interesting article. The way I see it, zombies are used to symbolize two different concepts these days- the slow, shuffling zombies are symbols of a dead, decaying society, and the fast, angry zombies are symbolizing the rebelious spirit. It's a facile analogy, but mostly fits.

Zombies have certainly become co-opted by corporate America. As he mentions in the article, they're now used to sell cars... and I saw a commercial for some kind of snack food the other day that was using zombies...

Great article, btw.

I'd rather Zombies were used to sell products than the dead-behind-the-eyes "celebrities" we usually get on ads.

This is nothing new. Whenever something is popular, people exploit it. Zombies are popular and people are cashing in on it. Even non horror fans enjoy zombies. Plus Zombies are easy and don't require much creativity which is severely lacking in today's media.
