Need help finding a movie
Hey guys, I need some help finding the title of a horror movie that I believe came out in the 90's. I thought the movie was called "Reapers" or something similar to that, possibly having the word "Reapers" or "Reaper" in the movie title, but I couldn't find anything on google, so this may not be the case. I will try to describe the movie to you the best I can, hopefully this rings a bell with somebody.
The plot of the movie: A small town has become infested by this strange hostile alien life form. The life form is like this hostile black sludge that is alive and has a mind of it's own. I believe this movie is based in the future because this team of scientists wearing futuristic astronaut looking suits and gear is sent to this town to investigate this strange infestation. Once this team of scientists arrives in the town and starts investigating the situation the sludge starts attacking these guys and killing them. A few particular things about this movie that I remember is that this enemy sludge life form would often make phone calls to the scientist team and when somebody would pick up the phone all that would be heard from the call is a really strange and creepy slurring of words or something it seemed like. The sludge had the ability to possess people and animals. I remember the sludge possessed this golden retriever dog I believe, and the possessed dog stared at the scientists in a really freaky way, lol. I forget how to the movie ended I'm pretty sure the scientists were attacking the sludge using guns to fight back against it. This is the best I can describe this movie, I hope somebody knows what I'm talking about and can help me. Thanks a lot for reading guys.

Yeah Phantoms is what I thought too.
Though it wasn't just sludge...it was kind of a big thing...and it wasn't set in the future, they were just wearing biohazard-proof gear, though the design may have been fictional.
