Michael Slade - Horror or not?
I was wondering how many people have read Slade books here. I have them all and find them terrific in a twisted sort of way. I have noticed, though, that my local bookstore seems to find them a bit of a puzzle. I look once and they are in the horror section, the next time I go they are in the crime/mystery section. Where do you think his (their) books belong? I think they are crime novels but many find them too intense for that.

I think my favourites were Ripper and Burnt Bones. They are very twisted stories and very graphic. The two that write them, the lawyer and his daughter must have a very special family relationhip. The earlier books were better - I do have most of them: Headhunter, Primal Scream. Ghoul, Hangman, Death's Door, Cutthroat. Bed of Nails, Swastika. I have had friends who couldn't read them - too twisted I guess.

Good question.. i think psychological-horror, or crime-horror.. they're so indepth that its hard to shove them into one category.
They're great books tho, Burnt Bones was my favorite. I loved the hitchcock theory, i think it was called. I read that bit of the book to anyone who would listen. What even makes them horror is interesting because the villains are people, not Freddy or zombies or mutants. Its an element that Sci-Fi likes to hint at. People are evil and do horrible and scary things .... some twisted people walk amongst us. Thats horror!!!!! |
