My real name is Margaruiette...i hate it,i was also named after my grandmother.Everyone calls me Maggie or Mags,unless you ask my ex and he would say bitch:D I also hate Maggie,thats what most people end up naming a dog;)I guess the only other nickname i have is Pink,thanks to you guys.

My name is John, not Jon, not Johnny, or Jonathon. I aboslutely hate when people spell it wrong or call me Jonathon. Though thats not the most hated part of my name. I hate my middle name alot, Earl. It sounds like a fucking hick name. AND YET, thats still not the most hated part of my name. My last name starts with a W, so my initials spell JEW. I fucking hate that, I used to get harrassed about it in school. My nickname was Jewboy Johnny. I hated that. Though its not like I totally hate my name. I have the same name as my father, and though I don't like him much I do plan on continuing the tradition. Though I always thought that was fucked up. Passing on a name that you yourself don't like that much. But hey, I can't really explain it myself.

Gabriel, as in the angel who spoke to Mary and Joseph.

I wasn't named because of that though. My mum originally wanted to call me Fletcher or even (as she has a love of unusual names) MERLIN. Luckily my dad stopped her. Then my mum read a 1874 book called "Far From the Madding Crowd", which was about a guy named Gabriel Oak.

My dad also had just recently watched the Stallone film "Cliffhanger". Stallone played a guy named Gabriel or as they call him "Gabe". And as I was born near Christmas it seemed to fit.

Isn't Bob one of those names that is short for something? I was always told when someone's called Bob or Bobby, their real name is Robert (ie-"Bobby" Robert Kennedy, I also have an uncle with this name), for Dick's, their real name is Richard, and for Bill's, their real name is William (ie "Bill" William Clinton)

But cool. You like Bobby, you'll get Bobby. :)

It's really unfortunate, because every Michael in my family (either side) turns out a fuckup.

I can relate, not personally though. On my mom's side my grandmother had 1 dozen of kids. So all eleven (the other one's my mother) of my uncles and aunts were named after family members. It was my grandmother's choice, my granddad was pushing for originality but my grandmother was a little more than aggressive when it came to raising kids; so it was pretty much her way or no way. And any thought of compromise was viewed as being disrespectful. And some of them turned out to be "losers" similar to the story of the person your grandmother thought of the name after. She even demanded my mother to keep the tradition going by naming me after my mom and great aunt (Beatrice) but my mom wasn't as weak as her dad in some respects, and stressed the points that she knew how much she hated that name growing up; usually the only people with those name have an aristocracy british background; sadly the only young person with that name was the Queen of the UK's granddaughter or great granddaughter; and the fact that my grandmother was the mother and not the mother. By the way none of my aunts and uncles actually like their names. My third oldest aunt was named after my grandmother (Sylvia Magazine Brown); her goal though was to change the middle name; but she had a dyslexic moment and wrote magazine on the birth certificate instead madaline. Same thing with one of my uncle's middle name: Jeffhell.

How did your mom's mom go behind her back? Didn't your mom fill out the birth certificate? So couldn't she oversee what your grandmother wanted? If you live in the states and are over 18 I believe you can change your name to Michaelangelo if you still want to. I believe it's $250 or at least in the 1990s it was. Make sure you bring your paperwork (original birth certificate, social security card, etc)

Anyway, have you ever thought about changing it? And if it makes you feel better, I know some one else called maggie...and she's not a dog--although she pretended to be one in an improv game. Glad that you like the name hdc's adopted you as.
