I went into it with very VERY low expectations, so that's probably why it impressed me. Then again, I thought that the writing was brilliant and so was the acting. It was interesting to see an Alien movie that created believable and intense character development...

I, too was exceedingly disappointed in Behind the Mask. I thought that the horror deconstruction was brilliant, well thought out and well put. HOWEVER, the actual horror part of the movie was just, well, silly. I didn't consider him a believable threat at all. I was more interested in the deconstruction and cameos. Also, it was the first time that I had heard "Ahab" in that context and was impressed with the verbiage and analysis. But as a horror movie, I thought it failed.

...

I actually have Funny Games (the original) at home from Netflix... I REALLY need to watch it. I refuse to watch the remake before watching the original.

the original is probably a bit better - though i really liked naomi watts in the remake - she is a great actress. tim roth was a bit of nothing (though so is the character)

i'm going to watch The Last Winter tonight - the cover says it was 'the scariest movie of the year' - though i've seen that before. its directed by the guy who did Wendigo - which i sort of liked - so we'll see

I'm excited to get my hands on The Last Winter. Netflix gets it in July and it's already in my queue...

Just watched the original Funny Games... And, well, dunno... My boyfriend called it "pretentious," which I can definitely see. I was annoyed by the occasional breaking of the 4th wall which I thought was completely unnecessary... But it wasn't too bad... I want to see the remake, though, because I'm curious as to how it was adapted; do we still break down the 4th wall? Or not?

I agree that the direction was phenomenal... I want to see his other films now. Have you seen any others? I guess I just thought that the deconstruction made it a little uneven.
