The Films of Jim Van Bebber

I remember I first got a boot leg of DeadBeat at Dawn (i live in Ireland) - it blew me away. I loved everything about it - the Cheesey dialogue - the DIY kung fu and stunts (i was/am a big martial artists) and the nasty fucking violence.

Most of all I loved that it was a pretty much a one man show. I really thought i had stumbled upon the next Sam Rami (or inhighsight Peter Jackson) but this was not to be.

I loved the shorts he made - John Martin, Doper and in particular My Sweet Satan (the real live case always interesrted me) and then he dissappeared. there were rumors of Charlies Family (aka The Manson Family) there were even production still etc but the film never appeared..

Well not till 2003 or so and it was for the most part amazing (not crazy about the modern day bits)...

Its such a pity I thin Van Bebber was prolly one of the greatest things that NEVER happen to the genre. It seems hes impossible to work with - a control freak etc etc...

What a pity - damn now I feel like putting on DEADBEAT and seeing 'what the word on the street is...'

You know that bit in Fight Club where they talking about 'Who'd u like to fight?' - the first person that springs to mind is van Bebber (ok after Mother Theresa)..

Any other fans?

He's awesome and his films just came out in a box set!

I love Deadbeat at Dawn his fils are true old-school grindhouse in a way that Tarantino and Rodriguez could never replicate - essentially because they are too good at what they do. They slum it to make exploitation where Van Bebber seems to be working at the height of his abilities at all times.

I guessing that's sort of the point of the thread, to introduce him to those who have net yet seen his movies.

I'm a huge fan of Mr Van Bebber! A true maverick of modern American cinema keeping the DIY "fuck you" spirit alive.
I'll definatley be picking up the boxset sometime soon and I'm looking foward to the Down DVD that he filmed (it'll be a classic concert flick). I've got all his flicks except for Doper and the workprint of The Manson Family (Charlie's Family).
I love Deadbeat At Dawn but The Manson Family and My Sweet Satan are my favorites out of his work. I really liked the modern parts of The Manson Family especially the ending... probably because I grew up in the 90s and it struck a chord for me. Pity Chunk Blower didn't get made the trailer is fuckin' dope.

Het Ferox do you have any links to the real life case which My Sweet Satan was based? I watched Black Circle Boys again not to long ago and it was based on the same/similar case and I really wanna read about the actual events.

Heres a link to Ricky "The Acid King" Kasso.

The book i read on the case was 'Say you love Satan' by David St Clair. Its not bad and not too sensationilistic.

The Film RICKY 6 is also based on the Case (its pretty good better than BCB).

Doper is bad at all (for what it is) - weird seeing a VanBebber film without violence.
