Mixed opinion. I went in to it hoping to love it, and I came out of it liking it just a tad. It's not something I'd buy on DVD, or watch again anytime soon. Not to say it's bad. There were some things that just threw me off.
First off, the visuals. They worked, and they didn't work. The whole thing feels like a staged production, as it should, because a grand majority of the film takes place within a single building. Upstairs we have Sweeney Todd's barber shop. Downstairs, Mrs. Lovett's Meat Pies shop, and below that, the room where both businesses meat (haw haw... such a pun.) There is of course a few scenes outside of this setting, but they can be counted on one hand. The actual town is constructed largely using CGI. Some of the camera angles are constructed in pure CGI as well; such as an introductory scene in which the camera pans down numerous streets, twisting and turning. It felt like I was playing a videogame. Also, the very *first* scene, in which some scenery and the title is displayed, is purely CGI as well... and it shows. The audience laughed at how fake this whole thing looked. While the film contains a satisfying amount of gore (most of it occurring in a montage, and the ending scenes...), some people might be thrown off at how animated the blood looks. I'm pretty sure some of the blood (if not all of it) was CGI. It's a very fake, fake, fake red. As if they were using a red fingerpaint. It doesn't look real, at all. While all of the deaths occur the same way, it never gets tiring to see just how Tim Burton will chose to send the blood a sprayin'. It's sort of Kill Bill-ish in nature, just how much blood there is, and how violently it sprays out. I thought the costumes and character designs and set designs were very well done. No complaints. If you are not aware, this film is a musical. Most of the dialogue is given in song. After most musicals, you might find the audience bursting out of the doors singing their favourite tunes. Sweeney Todd isn't like that. It's a musical yes, but nothing in it is very catchy. Minus one or two songs. Most of it is sung dialogue exchange, rather then repetitious verses and choruses. It's hard to remember the lyrics in any song, so singing along is pretty impossible. I also found that Johnny Depp tended to "talk to the music" rather then "sing to the music"... some scenes had him just saying lines in a slightly different tone, set to music. But a few full-on lyrical sections disproved any rumour that he couldn't sing, he does rather well. Johnny Depp is excellent as always, in the title role... but you know who really stole the show? No, not Sascha Baron Cohen (who was sporting a Borat-esque accent...) It was Helena Bonham Carter. She was just excellent. Excellent. She's probably the most lovable character in the film; has some of the best lines, best musical sequences, and humorous one-liners. You can't help but like her character. (The middle section contained a number of laugh-out-loud dark-humoured jokes.) While he first half of the film was rather boring, I thought. Nothing too exciting happened, and the film tended to drag a little (while setting things up...), the closing act made up for this, two-fold. The middle section showed improvement, but the finale - blew me away. It was amazing, I thought. Everything within the film came together; yes, there are twists, and yes, there are shocks. Of course, they are a tad predictable... but they are still there, so that's what counts. It was a satisfying ending that ultimately made me like the film a whole grade higher. I'd give it a B- / B. Hatchet - 9/10
My 2nd time seeing it. This time it wasn't on my computer. Hatchet has become one of my new favorites. Adam Green has made the best slasher flix I've seen in a long time. It is definitely a great homage to "Old School American Horror". |

I can definitely say, it wasn't one of my favorites. It's low budget with decent cameras. The thing that killed it for me was the horrible looking werewolf. You van tell it's just someone in a suit. Not to mention, it has a purple-ish tint and you can see the persons neck when they move sometimes.
