best zombie movies ?

While I'm well aware of the similarities the fact remains... zombies are living dead,the undead, animated corpses. The people in 28 were the living, infected with rage... too much of a technicality for me to catagorize them as zombie movies. But hey, no sweat, it's just my opinion.

No way. Here is the problem with Shaun: the 1st half to 3 quarters is good, but then when they get to the Winchester it takes a bad turn. IT GETS SILLIER. It should have gone the other way and turned into more serious of a film, and then lightened up and had a light ending like it did. You cannot successfully build tension and simultaneously have the characters taking the plot developments less and less seriously. It made me not care about the film or characters, which I had previously during the first portion of the film.

I've argued this to some of my friends, and those of them that love British comedy tend to say something like "that's British humor man...". Then I say "well OK, if I just don't like British humor then why did I love the first half of the film?".

hee hee... I can see your point, but honestly I feel that, despite the silliness, there are some true gory parts... And at the end, I really DO feel for the buddy tension.

I dunno why.... but I never liked Shaun OTD. It was just.... way overdone and it didn't make me laugh much.

Despite not being technically "zombies", I'm gonna say 28 Days Later is most definitely one of my faves. Same reasons already mentioned, same post-apocalyptic themes, same commentary on humanity and how people really aren't civilized when put under stress, or will find a way to justify doing something to someone else for their personal needs. Zombie movies aren't really about the zombies so much as showcasing the stress they put on society and what a thin veneer it is.
I liked Sean of the Dead a LOT...but it's more of a humor thing for me than a zombie movie.
Original Night of the Living Dead is also on the top of my list. It set the entire atmosphere for zombie movies afterwards...being overwhelmed by hordes of undead and having to hole up and hope that help comes while your numbers are being whittled away.

While I would make the argument that the 28 Days/Weeks movies can be construed as zombie films (though I definitely understand why people would argue), I am not sure that I would consider Slither a zombie movie.

It's one of my all time favorite monster movies, however. I would say that it's closer to John Carpenter's The Thing then the conventional (or even non-conventional) zombie mythos, and The Thing is definitely more Monster than Zombie.

Though I'm willing to hear justification - What makes Slither a zombie movie?

Apart from the usual, I suggest two good ones I have seen recently - Dead Heat and The Dead Next Door.

While the former is an action flick with large doses of black humor thrown in, the latter is a low-budget, cheesy little flick. Mindless entertainment stuff.

Fuck me I haven't seen dead heat since it came out (straight to video - obviously). Are we talking about the same one with Joe Piscopo and Treat Williams? Plus I think it had Vincent Price in it as well (I think times were hard) I remember loving that film, but even then knowing it was a very guilty pleasure. How well does it hold up today?

Dead next door, good choice. Shit script. No production value but an entertaining indie nonetheless.

Return of the living dead - Horror and comedy at it's finest.
Day of the dead - just for re-watchability value. It's my Sunday afternoon horror
Dawn of the dead - both versions are great in their own right
Dead and buried
Dellamorte Dellamore
House (borderline zombi flick) but fucking great blend of horro/comedy
The beyond -incoherent rubbish. But great nonetheless
Re-animator. The uncut version is the bee's knees
Children shouldn't play with dead things - long, talky and gore-less. Not really sure why I like it
Zombi flesh eaters - Uncut on video in the early 80's. The eye scene was worth the other 80 or so minutes.

Some you might not be aware of which are ultimately poor but have some stand-out moments
Night of the comet - The general atmosphere
Videodead - The zombie looking through the TV at the wiewer. Creepy.
Night of the demons - Linnea Quigley and the lipstick. That has rewind value alone.
City of the living dead - Head drilling and throwing up guts.
House by the cemetary - Dr Freudstein chasing that aggrivating kid up the stairs
Zombi holocaust - the 'groaning' sound creeped me out
Lifeforce - That birds tits. Hells teeth

i really enjoy this film. it always seems to get lost among the shuffle of other zombie films (maybe because it took a turn back to the "voodoo zombie" thing).
but it's really genuinely creepy at times and the performances are well done.
definitely an engrossing movie.
