Son Arrested In Fatal Hammer Attack

Toronto, Canada - The son of a man beaten to death with a hammer yesterday at his west Toronto home has been arrested.

"He was just standing there with a cellphone in his hand when the cops grabbed him and handcuffed him," said neighbour Jim Pearson, who had just stepped outside as police arrived.

Paramedics found the unconscious victim bleeding from severe injuries in the garage of his Arcot Blvd. home, near Albion Rd. and Weston Rd., just before 5 p.m.

Felice Bonadonna, 78, was pronounced dead at Sunnybrook hospital shortly afterward. Police said he had been attacked with a hammer.

Pearson said he knew Bonadonna was injured, but was unaware he had died, apparently from the blows to his head.

"This is too much. It's a real shame," Pearson said.

"You couldn't meet a nicer guy. He'd talk about soccer games when the World Cup was going.

"I'd always see him out there cutting his lawn."

Pearson said he'd known his neighbour for 17 years. Although he lived alone in the tidy red brick house, he often had visitors.

"His wife died quite a few years ago, but he had friends and relatives who came to visit," Pearson added.

Roy Bonadonna, 38, whom neighbours identified as the victim's son, was arrested. He has been charged with first-degree murder.

The death was Toronto's 23rd homicide of the year.
