director Wes Craven, producer Robert Shaye, co-producers Sara Risher and John Burrows, cinematographer Jacques Haitkin, composer Charles Bernstein, editors Rick Shaine and Patrick McMahon, effects producers Jim Doyle and David B. Miller, film historian David Del Valle, and actors Robert Englund, Heather Langenkamp, Amanda Wyss, and Ronnee Blakely

"The House That Freddy Built" - The Legacy of New Line Horror is also a great feature. They go through the movies they've made, how they came across franchises etc..., and the role Nightmare on elm Street played in it all.

I passed on the infinifilm because I already have the NOES boxed set. And I can't justify spending another $25 Can on the same movie I already have just for a few special features. But god knows I've been tempted.

I plan to pick this one up eventually. I didn't care for any of the sequels, so the box set would be pointless.

I wish that Johnny Depp was on the commentary.

Mhm, the DVDs did get a ridiculous price cut. You can grab them all in the Discount Bin at Walmart now. 6.88$ a piece.

I don't often watch special features on DVDs either. To me, all a DVD really needs is... a quality transfer, a wide selection of audio and subtitle streams, and a commentary. Needless to say, "deleted scenes" shouldn't be there, they should be re-added into the film where they were cut. I want to see the film as it was meant to be, not edited down for those with no attention span.

Slap all that together, and for any movie, it's worth owning.

Re. your delete scenes comment:

Alot of times, scenes are cut for good reason. Having them back in the film wouldnt always make it better.

Take League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. SDont know what you think of it, but I love it. Anyway...a few (most) of the deleted scenes there really deserved to be cut, would have detracted from the movie.

Franchise Discussion: A Nightmare on Elm Street

As of about 20 minutes ago, Ive finally got through the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise. Now, how about some nice friendly discussion?;)

The thing that makes me think that I prefer this franchise over Friday the 13th is sheer originality. Though alot of the Friday films were themselves stronger, they fell into a formula after awhile, where even though some of the films were undeniably pretty bad, Nightmare always at least had a new idea behind it. Friday the 13th has consistency, but Nightmare gets bonus points for not just re-hashing the same formula.

So what are everyone's favourite films in this infamous series? What were your favourite kills? What do you think about Freddy - better as a dark, menacing killer or a wacky dark comic?

Personally, here's how I would rank the series from best to weakest:

A Nightmare on Elm Street
Wes Craven's New Nightmare
A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors

Freddy Vs. Jason

A Nightmare on Elm Street Part 2: Freddy's Revenge

A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master
A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child

Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare

Until the first break, all 3 are awesome horror movies, some of the best of their kind. Freddy Vs. Jason isnt great, but its alot of fun; definatly more Nightmare than Friday. Part 2 was ok, but fairly forgettable...4 and 5 werent flat out horrible, but far from good...and Freddy's Dead just sucked. No continuity, crappy humor, horrible ending. Had some decent ideas behind it, but sure didnt turn out well.

Thoughts?

I agree with the ranking.

My favorite of the series is either the original or New Nightmare which are also the best in the series.

I prefer the darker Freddy because the jokes are there just in moderation. The original and New Nightmare are the best films which also happen to be the films he's darkest in. I enjoy the comedy but when it's heavy throughout the film it gets old fast. Freddy aside, I just enjoy dark films more than others.

Overall I think it's a good series with a couple of great movies, one or two subpar and a handful of decent, enjoyable films.
