Guillermo del Toro said it is one of his favorites... It is on my list, but I have not seen it... I saw teh mask/ hammer part in highlight clip and was affraid that might be the only good part...

It's visually arresting. Bava started as a cinematographer and it shows. The composition and art direction have clearly inspired Guillermo Del Toro, Tim Burton, Peter Jackson and numerous others.
The carriage ride through the woods is wonderfully stylized and the castle and crypt designs are brilliant. Barbara Steele is at her Femme Fatale best, but... Don't expect a masterpiece of storytelling... or even a film that makes any sense. I'll forever love it but I always recommend it with a that caveat.

How balls out is mask scene for the time?!
Twitch of the Death Nerve is totally pioneering. Shock is the best ghost flick hands down. What art direction do you see in Peter Jackson's stuff that's similar? Some of the Heavenly Creatures scenes are kinda down with Bava's style. |

The Orc faces are nearly identical to the image on the Mask. And as Frodo approaches Mordor, the scraggly, spidery trees resemble Bava's forest sets.
