Music+ ... A Chain Store

Yeah, okay, now, I'm sure most people will have no memories of such a thing. But I was wondering if anyone remembers a chain of music stores called "Music+" ("Music Plus"). They were around in the 70's and 80's as I recall, and were gone, I think, by the time the mid-to-late-80's rolled around. They had records, magazines, edgy comic books, posters, and the like. Basically it was your typical overpriced record store from the 70's, but sort of 7-11-ized. Attractive presentation, well designed stores, generally on the small side, but usually they had a good import section, and they carried a lot of odd titles and weird things. Somewhere I have a photo of one of their labels...

Yeah...and all the comic book stores are disappearing because the geeks now buy their comic books and monster magazines on Ebay. This is a weird transformation. But the "feeling" one got when going into a comic book store and looking at weird comic books has been transferred to the digital world. Now you drool over a jpeg image. You can't smell the sour old comics--yet--but I'm sure they'll figure out a way to make that happen too.

You're in LA, right?

Earth 2 on Ventural Bld in Sherman Oaks is an awesome comic shop and this weekend they're having their in-store Christmas Party with Patton Oswalt and Brian Posehn.

Ha ha! I used to live right around the corner from there, about ten years ago! Ah, those were good times. Good place to live. Yes, there are still a few comic book stores, thank goodness. Enjoy 'em, folks! They are like vintage wine.

I got into this conversation on another board a while back...I was getting nostalgic for a comic book store in Rosemead that I used to go to back in the day. Just last year it closed down and the building was sold to another company...they are now selling air conditioners there!

But years ago they had a musty, sticky, well developed comic book and magazine store there. The damn place was full of mostly old stuff. Just walking in one was hit by the atmosphere. There is something about old books...especially geeky old books. They had a used paperback shelf, they sold old Super-8 films in a glass case...this was like a dream. All the geeky comic books and monster magazines you could want. There was a grayish dust over everything. It probably sounds disgusting in some ways but...it's hard to describe...there was this unusual FEELING to the place, a fascinating vibration that drew me in there and made me want to stay, poring over all the weird treasures. Every time I went in I would find all kinds of things. It was the pull of History!
