Woman Allegedly Beat Mother With Plumbing Wrench

MERRITT ISLAND, Fla. -- Channel 9 uncovered disturbing new details in the case of an advocate for child abuse victims charged with trying to kill her mother. Police said Brenda Thimlar beat her mother with a metal plumbing tool.

Detectives said Monday, not only was it cold, calculated and carefully planned out, they also revealed how the 59-year-old woman survived the attack.

"I need an ambulance," Sharon Adams told the 9-1-1 dispatcher.

"Are you having a hard time breathing, ma'am?" the dispatcher asked.

"Yes, I've been beat up," Adams said.

Investigators said Brenda Thimlar had just led her mother into the garage to look through outdated food on a shelf and took an iron water main wrench and tried to kill her.
Inside her Viera home, Adams was barely able to call for help herself. Investigators said her daughter, Brenda Thimlar, had just led her into the garage to look through outdated food on a shelf and took an iron water main wrench and tried to kill Adams.

"Her daughter struck her multiple times and kept striking her across the head. When she fell to the garage floor, she played like she was dead," explained Agent Rosita Clark, Brevard County Sheriff's Office.

Investigators said Thimlar then went through the house and made it appear like Adams was the victim of a home invasion. Once Adams heard Thimlar drive away, she called 9-1-1.

"Hurry before they come back," Sharon Adams said on the call.

"Okay, how many was there?" the dispatcher asked.

"One," she answered.

"Okay, did you know the person?" the dispatcher asked.

"Oh please, please hurry," Adams said.

Neighbors said they saw Thimlar waiting on the street and took off after deputies started to arrive.

Thimlar was first thrust into the spotlight back in 1998 when Ann Barber, a daycare worker at a Cocoa church, was accused of injuring Thimlar's son by severely shaking him. Barber was convicted even though defense attorneys argued the abuse occurred before the child was in her care.

Detectives said they were looking over that case.

"We did look at that question again. We are re-examining that question," Clark said.

Detectives didn't have a clear motive and there was apparently no argument or dispute. Adams told detectives she didn't know why it happened and her daughter wasn't talking.

Detectives said they were considering whether Thimlar didn't want to care for her mother anymore or if it was financially motivated. Thimlar would be her sole beneficiary and was looking to move to North Carolina in the near future.
