I loved both films, but if I have to pick one, I'd go with the original. The approach and atmosphere was just so much more serious and intense. The second pretty much defined the horror/gore comedy, but that doesn't work as well for me.

i thought there was a ton of humor in the 1st one - it just wasnt as slick.
the insane amaounts of blood gushing all over ash .. the demons taunting him ... i thought it was a hoot .. |

a lot of folks dont like humor in a horror .. but i do depending on how it's used.
i'm rarely a fan of comedic relief because it's handled so badly in most films. i think when it's effective is when it's used to make us feel safe.. and seconds later our legs are kicked out from underneath us ... but having some skinny - or fat comedy relief idiot poorly written character is just distracting and counter productive to the horror.. |

ED2.
Comedy. Horror. better Quality. Better plot. And it spawned the Ash we all know and love. It also spawned one of my favourite scenes, the chainsaw on his own hand part with the spurting blood. Groovy. |
