Where can I acquire these films?

Hi all,

I'm new here and I'm sure this has been asked but there are so many threads to go through that I thought I'd ask anyway...

I'm looking to acquire two titles: Anthropohagus The Beast, by Joe D'amato and Cannibal Holocaust, by Rugero Deodato.

I do own a copy of the latter, which I believe is 97 minutes long. It includes the musk rat and turtle scenes and is taken from an American Drive-in reel. It came from Film Wizards. Although the inclusion of the animal scenes leads me to believe that this reel is intact, I'm told that there is a more complete version. Is this true and if so, is it available?

Regarding Anthropophagus, I can only find it as "The Grim Reaper", which I believe is a heavily cut version. Is the original available?

Any assistance would be gratefully received.

The American DVD entitled The Grim Reaper is cut, the German release by Astro is uncut under the same title (with some interesting extras). The recent UK release as Anthropophagous the Beast is cut.

There are essentially three significant versions of Cannibal Holocaust - uncut (Grindhouse, Cult Epics etc) featuring all gore and animal slaughter intact, cut (Go Video) with some violence and animal slaughter gone, and cut-to-bits (Vipco) with some violence and all animal slaughter extracised.

Very helpful; thank you.

So, do you know if the Film Wizards version is uncut? It certainly has the animal scenes but I wouldn't know if anything else has been cut if it's not there. Which scenes have been cut from other versions? If you know, I'll check mine to see if they're there.

The Film Wizards release will be the full uncut version, around 96 minutes (allow time for format conversions and compression, a minute or two either way).

The old UK pre-VRA release was trimmed of various violent and non-violent material (see below), and the most recent UK releases are worthless in exorcising all the controversial scenes which make the film what it is.

This is a cut and paste from Angelfire.com, and looks accurate at first glance:-

Cannibal Holocaust was released on video in the UK prior to the Video Recordings Act on the "Go Video" label, although this version had been cut by about 7mins so the distributors could fit it on a 90min tape. This version was withdrawn in the mid 80's after it listed on the Department of Public Prosecutions "Video Nasties List" and the distributors successfully prosecuted for obscenity. The uncut version was submitted to the BBFC for a UK release in 2001 and was passed with over 5 minutes of cuts, which removed all the animal violence, as well as heavily toning down the ritualistic sacrifice of the girl on the mud bank, the rape of the native girl by the film crew and the gang rape of the female cameraman by the natives.

The Japanese laserdisc and DVD releases were uncut in terms of gore but the nude scenes were optically censored. Dutch firm "Cult Epics" released an uncut laserdisc and video in Holland, Vipco released an uncut video in Denmark and Irish company Cosa Nostra released an uncut video in mainland Europe. The first DVD release by Dutch firm EC Entertainment, in the green case, was fully uncut although the re-release in the black case with the skull logo had the shorter version of the "Road to Hell" sequence on it. This was corrected on the 2-disc "ultrabit" edition, which also had an additional scene of dialogue between Monroe and his guide (he replies "What?" after being informed they'd been invited to dinner), although this was taken from the Italian print which has the intro and end titles in Italian and omits the English subtitles between the soldiers as they're speaking Venezuelan.

Thank you all for your advice.

I actually secured a copy of Anthropoghagus on ebay last night: it's The Grim Reaper but on the German label, so uncut.

I also ran my tape of Cannibal Holocaust to the end and the film itself is 93 minutes long: would this suggest that I have the uncut version? The rape of the female camera operator is on there, as is the penis removal and dismembering of one of the males.

Thanks again for your help.
