gore orphanage
Class 3 haunting
Fear factor: 7 out of 10 It's tough to mention haunted places without talking about the infamous Gore Orphanage. This place is shrouded in urban legend and mystery, finding the truth behind what really happened may be impossible. The very popular legend is that a cruel caretaker, was in charge of the orphanage and was very mean to them. One night he burned the place down with all the children inside. Modern day legends talk about bloody foot prints in the snow, children's voices heard, the smell of burning wood, and creaking wood that sounds like a door, glowing tombstones deep in the woods, and other various things. Unlike other professional ghost hunters, I do believe there is at least some truth to the legend, but it might be glorified a little bit. First if you check the records, there is no report of the orphanage burning down with people in it. That leads people to believe it didn't happen, I think the police had an open investigation on it and put a gag order on the fire. So the newspaper's weren't allowed to report it. That may sound like a far fetched conspiracy, but think about how bad it would have been if the news got out. Also think about the time, early 1900's, orphans were very unwanted and would have been very easy to make disappear. Then to divert attention the second building was burned down many years latter to make the trail colder. I will stand by this opinion because of what I've seen and experienced out there. Next legend is somewhat based on truth. I have seen the glowing stones, but they were across a deep ravine, so we couldn't get to them. Bloody footprints? Well I took a trip out in the snow and only froze my ass off. This might be totally false, at least I think it is, but I'll keep checking once and a while. Children's voices, YES there are defiantly lots of children haunting the area, even if they are the Wilber children, or the Swift family's children. Burning smell, I have experienced this. On a trip in November, we smelled a huge fire. We smelled it at least five times, and it was very very strong. I have severe allergies and I can't smell anything, even I was smelling this strongly. No it wasn't burning trash, and there wasn't a fire in the fire pit in the back, not even embers. Also I've heard the creaking of wood, it could be the wind, but not when the wind isn't blowing and when you shine a light in the trees the branches aren't moving! I've been blabbering on forever, so here's my final though. Something terrible happened here, at the very least children were tortured or abused, maybe even killed. Many probably died in a fire, but not all of them. It might have only been a small fire and it didn't burn the whole building down. The site is haunted by the Swift and Wilber children and is much more active then many people give it credit for. for more and pictures go here

That's very interesting...Hey Mud, Why not write a story about the ghosts in your 130 year old house in Belgium?...That could be interesting, too...Just a thought...:)
