Elderly Man Burns Himself To Death

Queens Man Sets Himself On Fire And Dies

New York - A 78-year-old Queens man doused himself with gasoline and set himself ablaze early yesterday, dying just yards from his home, authorities said.
"When we got to the scene, we found his walker next to the can of gasoline," said a firefighter. "He was in the middle of the street."

Neighbors described the man, whose name wasn't released, as a retiree and longtime St. Albans resident.

He walked out of his Lewiston Ave. home with the aid of an aluminum walker just after 5 a.m.

His burning body was found at Murdock and Lewiston Aves. after neighbors called 911 to report a fire, officials said.

The dead man's family was too distraught to talk.

"We have no comment except to say my father passed away today," said his shaken adult son.

Neighbors gathered on the corner to grieve.

"He was a very nice man who loved his family," said a family friend. "Something like this always makes people surprised."
