Woman Fights For Right To Bury Son With His Head

Woman Fights for Right to Bury Murdered Son With His Head

Russia - An investigator in the central Russian city of Oryol agreed to let a woman bury her murdered son but ordered that the body be decapitated before she was allowed to take it.

Viktor Tarazanov, an investigator with the district prosecutor’s office in Oryol, ordered the decapitation of the young man’s body before burial, local human rights activists said.

An Oryol-based human rights group voiced concern over the dubious order issued by Tarazanov after they received a complaint from the mother. Rights activists helped the woman to file a complaint at a local court, Dmitry Krayukhin, head of the Institute for Civil Problems Yedinaya Evropa (United Europe), told the Regnum news agency.

Krayukhin said that on April 26 the woman came to visit her son and found him dead in his apartment. The investigation into his murder was launched by detective Viktor Tarazanov.

On April 29 Tarazanov said the bereft mother could take her son’s body home for burial. Hours later the woman learned that the investigator had issued an order to decapitate the body and keep the head for the purposes of the investigation.

At first the woman complained to a senior priest at the Smolensky Cathedral. “Father Nicholas told me he had never before read a burial service over a beheaded body!” she told the lawyers. “I even considered filing a request to drop the case if only they would let me have the head of my son back!”

Meanwhile, district prosecutor Aleksandr Grinyov rejected the woman’s request to let her bury her son’s body along with his head, Regnum reports.

“We hope the court would allow the mother to bury her son in the Christian tradition,” Dmitry Krayukhin said. Rights activists are also set to sue the prosecutors for moral damages.
