There were some people who thought it was really scary. There were a lot more people who thought it was stupid. A really good movie plants a thought in your head. An example would be watching a show about a killer who attacks his victims in the shower. Now, you could walk away thinking, "That was the dumbest thing I ever watched." However, when you shower, you get all freaked out and have to keep looking outside of the shower curtain to make sure you are alone. The BWP was not very relatable. It is not like it's going to happen to people. Relatability is scary
Is seeing dead people "relatable" (The Sixth Sense)?
Chain saw-wielding cannibal families (TCM)?
Ghosts (The Others)?

Actually, reading your post again I sympathise with your lack of metal scope - do you really need your horror to be based around your everyday life?

The horror in BWP comes not from the seen and familiar, but from the unseen and the mysterious - the mystery which remains long after the film has finished and troubles your mind in the middle of the night.

But if you really need your "relatability", give the movie a passing thought when out camping in the woods - probably not a wise thing to do.

Relatable/relatability aren't even words.
