And to not want your child visiting a horror site is not overprotecting them. I think that's a bit extreme. Just cause a parent has rules, doesn't mean they are being overprotective. Apprently your idea of being overprotective is different then mine. Not letting them do certain things or being with certain people shows that you care, just letting them do what ever they want does nothing for their self esteem. As a parent it's their job to nurture it as apposed to telling them " well do what you want cause i don't want rules and structure to hinder you" Kids want their parents to let them know what to do, lord knows they have a hard enough time making decisions on their own. The day you stop telling your kids what you think is best, your telling them "hey i don't give a shit about you" IMO

And if they hate me cause i won't let them do every fuckin thing, then so be it. I as a parent deserve the respect, as i in turn have given them the same. Even now with my 4 year old, i have no problems saying sorry to her if the situation calls for it. Why? Cause that shows her i value her and respect her. But if she comes to me at 10 wanting to wear some slut gear, no, i'm not gonna let her. And yes she may hate me, but there is something that you don't think about. Every good parent knows to comprimse, that way everyone wins. Blah blah blah

But....wearing slut gear/hangin' with the wrong crowd...etc
Is pretty different from cruising around a horror forum. Clearly there's an interest there, and it's being stomped on, why? Pre-conceived ideas about horror and those that have an interest in it. Same old story - and it's a story that only gets told by those that are well...ignorant about the whole horror deal... I agree, up until a certain age, a child should not be exposed to graphic or innapropriote material, and yes, it should be up to the parent to determine when is the right time. However, just saying "no" to a particular genre of film is not very productive at all. There's just no reason for it. Taking more of an interest, even checking out the forum themselves, kicking back and watching a few horror films with their kid, seeing that they don't take it as gospel, might be an idea. I think the whole thing is with parenting (although I've only had a little brother myself), is that there's some things you gotta be prepared to meet half way on, at least until the point that it DOES become a cause for concern. - B |
