Franchise Discussion: A Nightmare on Elm Street

As of about 20 minutes ago, Ive finally got through the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise. Now, how about some nice friendly discussion?;)

The thing that makes me think that I prefer this franchise over Friday the 13th is sheer originality. Though alot of the Friday films were themselves stronger, they fell into a formula after awhile, where even though some of the films were undeniably pretty bad, Nightmare always at least had a new idea behind it. Friday the 13th has consistency, but Nightmare gets bonus points for not just re-hashing the same formula.

So what are everyone's favourite films in this infamous series? What were your favourite kills? What do you think about Freddy - better as a dark, menacing killer or a wacky dark comic?

Personally, here's how I would rank the series from best to weakest:

A Nightmare on Elm Street
Wes Craven's New Nightmare
A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors

Freddy Vs. Jason

A Nightmare on Elm Street Part 2: Freddy's Revenge

A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master
A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child

Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare

Until the first break, all 3 are awesome horror movies, some of the best of their kind. Freddy Vs. Jason isnt great, but its alot of fun; definatly more Nightmare than Friday. Part 2 was ok, but fairly forgettable...4 and 5 werent flat out horrible, but far from good...and Freddy's Dead just sucked. No continuity, crappy humor, horrible ending. Had some decent ideas behind it, but sure didnt turn out well.

Thoughts?
