Graphic sex scenes in Italian director Bernardo Bertolucci's new film "The Dreamers" will likely be cut out of the movie before it can be viewed by US audiences, the director revealed. Bertolucci is the director of several highly acclaimed movies including "The Last Emperor", "Stealing Beauty", and "Last Tango In Paris".
"The Dreamers", Bertolucci's new tale of sex, discovery and disillusionment in the Paris of 1968 was well received when it premiered at the Venice film festival, despite sex scenes which are among the most graphic ever to be screened in mainstream cinema.
"I know there is a strong possibility that the film will be released with a restricted classification there," the Italian director told a news conference in Venice.
"Obviously somebody thinks the US public is too immature for this film, so unfortunately there's a strong chance that the film will be released in a different form than we in Europe can see it."
He said it was ironic that the then-shocking "Last Tango", starring Marlon Brando and Maria Schneider was released in the US in 1973 with little editing, while his latest film would face the cutting board.
"What happened. What's going on down there?" he asked.
