Six "Leprechaun" movies? Who knew? Not me. And being a horror movie reviewer, I should know these things. I vaguely remember the first Leprechaun movie, released way back in 1993 and starring a pre-Friends, pre-Pitt Jennifer Aniston. I recall it being kinda funny and kinda bloody, and now a decade and five films later, things haven't changed much.
Willow's Warwick Davis reprises his role as the sawed-off gold-greedy murderer, and this time the pot of gore, er, gold, is stolen by some tough urban youths. Lep can't let them get away with the goods, so he goes into their 'hood to take back what is rightfully his. In his green suit, jaunty hat and tiny, buckled high-heeled shoes, Lep busts out a few rhymes as he busts a couple of skulls. Look for some slightly clever homages to The Wizard of Oz (1939), The Shining (1980) and Cape Fear (1991).
The disc features some commentary, which is actually better than the movie by itself. There are two tracks -- one with first-time writer/director Steven Ayromlooi and Davis, and then another with Ayromlooi and cinematographer, David Daniel. Aside from Davis's canned "Leprechaun facts", the first commentary is the best and it really gives the viewer a glimpse into how hard it must be to make a presentable movie with so little time and almost no budget.
So, is the DVD worth your hard-earned money? I guess you really can't go wrong with a movie that features a scene of "murder by bong", but I'm still waiting for Chucky vs. The Leprechaun (admit it: you'd watch it!).
