As soon as I saw the director credit pop up on my DVD screening of Pig Hunt, I thought, "Uh-oh…" Jim Isaac is a perfectly nice, polite, and intelligent man — I've interviewed him before — but his last movie, Skinwalkers, left an indelible stain on my brain. I was hoping Pig Hunt would be entertaining at least in the laughs department (unintended or not; either would have been fine).

It was not.

Pig Hunt is a fairly routine city-slickers go to the country and get messed up kind of horror movie. But it doesn't take itself seriously enough to be thought of in the same flash as Deliverance, nor does it have enough fun to be on par with a Cabin Fever or Wrong Turn movie. It's not really a creature feature, so you can forget about a cool quadruped villain along the lines of Razorback or Black Sheep.

The story begins at the beginning — a car full of bickering brats bickering and being bratty on a long road trip. Very, very long. Finally, they reach their destination: the dirt farm where John (Travis Aaron Wade) was raised. He's eager to show his girlfriend Brooks (Tina Huang) and his three interchangeable buddies the ins and outs of hunting game in the wilderness. But there's already something hunting on those grounds, and it's after some long-pig.

Bloody deaths ensue, but to me it felt more like a TV movie I might catch late at night on Syfy or Chiller. Can you tell I'm not "high on the hog"? — I don't recommend Pig Hunt even for those who'll watch almost any nature-gone-bad horror flick. Instead, rent Razorback and chase it with Long Weekend.
