This isn't really news, but someone submitted this article so we thought it would be worthy of mention. Film critic Joel Seigel ran a piece talking about the big-name film stars that got their start in horror movies - and there are quite a few. He credits the fact that so many get their start in horror to the fact that horror movies are generally lower-budget than other genres, and thus more willing to cast relative unknowns in lead roles. A few of the actors & actresses mentioned are:

- Tom Hank's first role was Elliot in 1980's "He Knows You're Alone" (aka "Blood Wedding").

- Meg Ryan's first movie spot (though she had previous TV roles) was as Lisa in "Amityville 3-D" (1983).

- Though not their first movie parts, Renée Zellweger and Matthew McConaughey had starring roles in 1994's "The Return of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre".

- 1992's horror/comedy "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" provided Hillary Swank and David Arquette with their first film roles, and Luke Perry with his third.

- Demi Moore's first starring role was in the 1982 movie "Parasite".

- And, of course, Johnny Depp's very first onscreen performance was as Freddy-food in the original "A Nightmare on Elm Street".
