300 (DVD)
I was sent the hacked-off fullscreen edition of the 300 DVD, which not only destroys the scope and beauty of the epic Frank Miller graphic novel on film, but it also offers just one lonely, gap-heavy commentary as its additional release material.
The story follows King Leonidas (Gerard Butler) and his loyal 300 Spartan soldiers in 480 B.C. as they charge into a battle they cannot possibly win. They know this, but they refuse to go down without a fight. A big, bloody fight.
The plot is pretty simple, so those looking for palace intrigue and dialogue-heavy skullduggery will more than likely be disappointed (but the movie's pretty short, so the bashing battles seldom wear out their welcome). While it's a no-brainer to say that guys will love the action and gals will love the guys onscreen, there's actually something for everyone in 300. (Fans of horror, dark fantasy and science fiction will be pleased: Creepy creatures and impossible characters abound.)
The double-disk DVD has a lot of extras — everything you'd expect to see, like history vs. Hollywood, stuff on the CGI, a look at the source material, making-of featurettes, and so on. Those purchasing the full screen version (and why would you? This movie was made for the widescreen experience) will get just the commentary — which is, it should be noted, captioned for the hearing-impaired. That's a nice touch.
On the obligatory yak track are director Zack Snyder, writer Kurt Johnstad, and cinematographer Larry Fong. Between the three of them, they barely put one sentence together. Actually, it's Synder who does most of the talking, but it's not nearly as entertaining as his self-deprecating "rock star!"-riddled commentary on the 2004 sleeper, Dawn of the Dead. And speaking of dead, there's a lot of dead air here… and when Snyder is chatting, he's merely stating facts and never really venturing into more anecdotal areas.
All in all, the fullscreen, single-disk 300 DVD is pretty perfunctory.
