I'll give it to you on Boo. There is a lot of the twitchy special effects, and the ending is subpar. That being said, I didn't expect anything when I saw this movie, so I was pleasantly surprised. I'll lower my rating to a 6.5. :D
I am not, however, backing down on 2001 Maniacs. It's nothing more than a comedy. Granted it has blood, guts, and gore, but there was nothing remotely scary about this movie. (Of course, you will say the same thing about some of the movies I find scary! :) ) The redneck, backwoodsy humor got old after about 10 minutes. If that kid and his sheep ran through one more scene...I would have thrown something at the TV!!! I did like Robert Englund in it, even though he was one of the most over-the-top characters. And I did like the ending. It didn't go out the way a lot of horror movies (excuse me, comedies) do. I stand by my initial rating of 3 and the caveat of it being overly generous. Of the four movies I rated, Creep and Satan's Little Helper were the two I actually liked best. I know that doesn't show in the ratings, but I'm new at this. ;) |

Just to let you know, 2001 Maniacs never tried to be scary, that was not it's intent. It was a comedy through-and-through.
This weekend is movie mania for me, since summer has come in full swing. No more school, whoo! I do have a wedding to go to, however, which I really don't want to go to... |

I never pass up an oppourtunity to pimp A Face in the Crowd, so I'mma back up Return's and Austin's statements (and say that 9/10 is a bit low)

Walk the Line
I should start out by saying a few things. First off, I'm definitely a fan of Johnny Cash, and if you aren't you likely wont share my opinions on this fine film. Second, the isn't much in the review that hasn't been said before...but it's my review, so sue me. Now, let me get this out of the way: The actors are phenomenal. All the praise, awards and nominations were wholeheartedly deserved. Phoenix does an incredible job as Cash, as does Witherspoon as June Carter. They are very believable together and both do a great job. There was some great work in the supporting cast as well, for example Tyler Hilton as Elvis Presley. He didn't have very much time on screen, which I think is a shame. Next, the music! On top of being great actors, Phoenix and Witherspoon show that they really have pipes! Not only are they very good singers, the sound very similar to their real-life counterparts. I almost felt like singing along at a few parts...but then I realised that I'd probably scare everyone away. The only thing I didn't particularly care for was the directing. It seemed very bland, and on top of that the editing was pretty bad in places. All in all this is a great movie to see, even if you aren't a Cash fan. Highly recommended. 8/10

She's the One
Thought it would be a boring chick-flick, rented for the wife... turned out to be a lot better than I expected. I actually liked this one. |

V for Vandetta (*****/*****)
Reccomended. I won't say much about the film itself. It is timeless, I believe, and something everyone should see. Regardless of whether they decide in the end that it is a good film, or not. I can say I teared up a few times for the sheer sake that I felt like I needed to. Not because it was sad, emotional, or for any other reason then this. Because it was the truth. Beneath this mask there is more than flesh. Beneath this mask there is an idea, and ideas are bulletproof. Mr. Ebert stated that the film's ending was not a nessacity, and he would have liked it otherwise for the signifance of the building. I, for one, disagree. If this did not happen in the film - V would simply by another form of the government. A let down. And we've all had enough of that. --- On a different note, on the IMDb discussion boards there has been speculation to whether or not V was gay. There have been more disagreeers then ageers, and many stating the claims he might be gay are "homophobic" and "unjust". While I myself percieve these very comments to be unjust. People are quicker to say he is not, then to say he is. And why, might I ask? Why claim a remark when it is you who may truly that way? Personally, I believe that one of the brother's who wrote this film intended it to be this way. V was gay. While the other, may not have shared this viewpoint. Thus it is left to interpretation. This is what I have to offer. The concetyration camp V was contained in served as a camp for a special type of person. It is not directly stated which "type" of people were helf here - but due to latter events I have come to the thought of it being homosexuals. How? Through the story of Veronica. She refers to the people at the camps as "us". She was gay herself, as were some of the other members in that camp. The "us" could refer to another type of person that she might also happen to be, yes. But her girlfriend is taken also, and as well - we are shown a male couple being invaded in their home, and taken from their beds. The fact that V shares on odd connection with the TV presenter - the egg dish. This also backs up the theory. He tells Evey that in his perfession, it is assumed that they would entertain young girls and women - and that he cannot have what he truly desires. A man, I was left to fill in the blank. He shares the same views as V, and perhaps shared more at another time. When Evey is released from her confinement, she leaves - lingering in the face of V, for a goodbye kiss. He does not waver, however, and something in his expression (body, as we do not see his face) can suggest a sadness. He doesn't want to offer a kiss that does not mean something, as he does not love Evey in that way. That's what I gathered, but as I stated, perhaps the remaining brother decided it should be otherwise - as in the end, V reveals his feelings. Whether being romantic, or just a gesture as to the bond of the couple, we are unsure. The case for V being Gay, and those in it as well is also backed up by the revalation that a certain church following confessed and was charged with the entire incident. The church who know tries to defy gay rights. Is this the next step? V makes you think, and for not giving solid answers. For that, I appreciate the film even more. Watch it. |
