I admired the fact that you were forthcoming in the difficulty you had in watching it as opposed to the people I've been hearing say that it was a "cop-out" or a "cheap shot".

i had a discussion with my friend - who loved the movie but didnt like the end ..

he felt that it wasn't earned .. and by that he meant that it seemed to go against the character of the father .. so it didnt flow right .. a powerful ending when there was no build to it.

i have mixed feelings about it.

earned or not i respect it that it sets it aside from a lot of other films because few dare to be that downbeat.

it cheapened out when the religious kook was shot - it pandered to the audience ..
the ending almost seemed like pennance for the audience to have wished for her death. (i'm sure people in the theatres cheered when she was shot)

i dont know - i was really devistated .. it forced you to ask yourself 'what the fuck would i do - and how insane would i be after....
i was too distracted by that to consider if it was really earned or not ... too late - the thoughts are in my head ...

well i was thinking ... is that what the character would do or is that what i would do ?

personally i'd wait until the exact last possible second ..

but after what this guy had gone through - the sense of helplessness (was the entire world gone ?), his wife gone

the sense of guilt ..

and 'daddy - promise me you wont let the monsters get me'


i dunno - i've never been in that position of hoplessness - and never will be - touch wood

That is a good point, and, again, I full respect it because there is an explanation behind the dislike.

Now, my outlook on the ending is certain to be very different from yours, or any other father's, simply because I have never actually had a full responsibility for another human being's life.

I guess the way I look at it is that the father felt that, from what he had seen, this may be the last serene moment they have left. There is merit behind waiting until the last possible second- which, in this case, would have saved his son's life- but if the story had taken a different turn, the boy may have died in a moment of agony and terror. At least in the car, with no visible monsters, he didn't die in a moment of absolute shock/horror.

I think people were most dissapointed with the fact that the protagonist, unlike traditional American film nature, was completely and utterly wrong. He blew it; his son is dead through no act but his own. Yet how can we blame the man for doing what looked most right in the situation in which it happened? He is, after all, human; this is what the sotry is about-humanity and mortality.

The ending sparks interesting debate for sure.

I felt the exact same way ,and for the same reason, when [oddly enough..another Stephen King movie] Pet Cemetery came out. I wouldn't watch it for a couple of years later.

It most definitely wasn't deserved....thats what made it so powerful. I personally think I would have sat in the car for as long as I could.

but i'm a big baby anyway:D

also....I will admit...I was happy when the bitch got shot.

a real kick in the teeth would have been if she lived and at the end they all were on one of the trucks.
