Blood Moon (2014)
C+
Average western horror that could've been better with a bigger budget.
Roiffalo, it involves a werewolf.

Last Action Hero (1993)
A/B
Such fun...
I think it's only the third time I've seen this movie. First time was in the theater.
Noticed a few things I didn't notice before. Including Ian McKellen playing a small part.

Not sure if this is the exact quote, but...
"I want to kill you so bad I've got a hard on!"

Definitely, 8/10.

The Visit manages to do two great things: it breaks the losing streak Shyamalan has been having for over a decade, and it manages to continue a winning streak for 2015 horror. The Visit is about two siblings who visit their estranged grandparents for a week while the girl, Becca, films a documentary about their stay. After a few strange encounters, they realize something is seriously wrong with their hosts. Although it wasn't as terrifying as Unfriended or It Follows, The Visit is the most fun I've had watching a horror movie in the theater. You'll be laughing your ass off through laced fingers; it's just as thrilling as it is funny. The movie perfectly punctuates every intense scene with some witty dialog from the kids. I smell a comeback for a once-acclaimed director, and the first step is with the wickedly fun The Visit.

9/10
You really thought it was funny? I thought that most of the "jokes" (surrounding the kids) were stupid.

So is it worth seeing ChronoGrl? I see Horrorcrux likes it, but as much as I like him, we don't agree on horror movies. Lol. Just tell me there is no week attempt at a twist at the end, that's always my fear with him.

So here are my thoughts - I actually want to get other folks' opinions because the people that I was with really seemed to enjoy it... Have you ever come out of something like a show or a movie, feeling a definite and certain way (like, "Wow! That was so terrible!") and you're about to seek comradery among the group your with and then you realize, with horror, that ALL OF THEM FEEL THE EXACT OPPOSITE? Granted, I went with a Meetup group that I was meeting for the first time so I wasn't sure our movie tastes were even all that similar...

The Visit (2015)

My initial impression coming out of the movie that it was very much overall "MEH" and that I've seen better, creepier found footage movies with independent fare along the lines of The Taking of Deborah Logan.

What bugged me:
  • The story centers around two characters, a brother and sister. The sister is filming their trip as part of a "documentary" she is making. So, she's essentially the Shamalan stand-in, the auteur - And the dialogue she was given was so incredibly pseudo-film-intellectual and self-referential and forced - I just couldn't buy a teenager (?) speaking at a college, Film 101 level - And I get it - It IS supposed to be self-referential, but I really don't think that Shamalan is really that introspective. Everything out of her mouth - oh boy - Was rough. Not her fault, though, the dialogue was just way too old for her, I guess.
  • As weird things started happening in the movie I just couldn't shrug off my disbelief that the kids would just stay there as opposed to calling the police. Honestly, there were times where I wondered how the grandparents were able to take care of themselves at all - Hints at senility are played as laughs (which creeped me out and made me sad more than anything else) and the kids shrug and say, "Ohhhh, it's OK. They're just OLD." With a good horror movie, you need to be able to suspend your disbelief and I just couldn't believe why the kids would stay there.
  • There is of course a "twist" and I actually thought it was a pretty good one! I had been guessing at it during the movie but didn't quite get there - I thought that moment of the reveal was fantastic and creepy but, honestly, as things start to go off the rails, I thought that the two kids were too annoying and making too many poor decisions that I rolled my eyes instead of being scared for them.
  • The final thing that annoyed me was the tone - I thought the tone was inconsistent throughout and found that the "comedy" parts were more annoying than anything else. As I read reviews, come to find out that the comedy was one of the things reviewers LIKED and that was part of the POINT of the movie - Honestly, I thought that the tone was so unsuccessful that I wouldn't call it a comedy at all. Let me give you an example of this "comedy:" [LET'S SAY THIS IS A SPOILER IF YOU DON'T WANT TO KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THE MOVIE] It's nighttime and the kids hear a creepy noise... They open the door of their bedroom and there is their grandmother, naked, and frantically clawing at the walls. It's actually pretty disturbing and horrifying - But then the boy says, "OH MY GOOOD! I'M BLIIIIIND!" which gets a huge laugh from the theater but a big ol' eye roll from me because, really? I just don't have the patience for juvenile humor - THAT'S the kind of humor that you're in for in this movie.

I felt like I was in this weird parallel universe - Everyone I saw it with liked it - But these were people I was meeting for the first time so I'm not sure if I can trust their tastes... I honesty couldn't tell if it's actually an ok movie and I'm just a cynical cranky fuck or not but man I was disappointed.

tldr: I really wasn't a fan. The comedic elements didn't work. But a lot of people liked it so maybe give it a try...?
