Idi i smotri aka Come and See (1985)
![]() This Russian WWII masterpiece caught my attention when I saw the title on Time Out's recent list of 100 Best Horror Films. I don't like to argue on whether it's actually entitled to tag as a horror film for its magnificent & artistic portrayal of horror of WWII; cause it delivers far more than that. Go & see it...if you still haven't. It truly deserves its place to any all time greatest list than in a compilation for a particular genre . >>: A

I should have explained-I want to watch the movie first because nine times out of ten (for me) the movie is worse than the book. If I read the book first I will never like the movie because a movie can never be as in depth or have as much scope and detail as a book. I'd rather give the movie a chance without comparing it to the book. Then when I do read the book I enjoy all the extra information and further explanations much more than I would have done had I read the book first.

The Calling (2000) This fast paced horror mystery thriller set on the Isle Of Man is nothing original but it has the balls to go into much darker and daring territory than more mainstream films of a similar bent (involving satanists and the antichrist) would be prepared to. The lead character is extremely annoying but a supporting role from the always a pleasure to watch, Alice Krige keeps you glued to your seat. More violent and dark hearted than gory but that is fine in this context plus there are some genuinely harrowing scenes involving the antichrist kid. Definitely recommended.
