Angels with Dirty Faces (1938). What happens when good and evil turn out to be childhood chums? This classic, with movie greats Cagney and Bogart, unknowingly address the question of nature versus nurture, with the two inevitably blending into one element of character development. The result is the manufacture of blind hope that oil and water, or more like elemental sodium and water, will somehow combine without calamitous result. The story was wonderfully infused with a moral fundament that is never stuffed down our throats, taking on the impetuous of the social evils of the day sans judgment. Our players are up for the job, turning in worthy performances on all accounts, not without a few bumps and bruises from the Dead End Kids. The direction and camera work are all on par for a flick of high caliber, with closeups and angles that punctuate all the right moments, all of this to be followed by a moral decision that most could not bear. "What do ya hear what do ya say?" Well, I say that this is a flick that should find as apt an audience today as any of yesteryear.

Shameless rip-off of the Predator series, mixed with a touch of Lost and The Descent. Guess they wanted to make a quick buck while the euphoria of Rodriguez's Predators was still up. Plotholes aside, if you are a fan of creature flicks, this might give you some kicks but overall, skip it. You won't be losing much.

Beautifully complex & amazing! The ending gave a Silent Hill finale kind of vibe, loved it.

The Serpent and the Rainbow (1988). Filmed in Haiti, this flick must be applauded for holding true the religion of Vodou, at least as well as can be expected by the west. The dark beauty of this heavily misunderstood religion was seamlessly captured by this Wes Craven classic. The story itself, loosely inspired by Wade Davis' incredible book of the same name, with bravado took the basic elements of the book and crafted a wonderful and fun little tale of terror. The acting was strong on all accounts, and accolades are to be given to Zakes Mokae for somehow keeping that ghastly grimace permanently cemented upon his mug. The direction was solid Craven, with some fanciful camera work to add to the occasional claustrophobic terror. The ending, tied in with the collapse Baby Doc Duvalier, tended towards buffoonery, but somehow does not detract from the entertainment of the film. One of Wes Craven's better flicks, the Serpent and the Rainbow is a notch above most horror.

One of the most stunning sci-fi films ever made, IMO. Destined to rank up there among the best in that genre.

"The Missing" (2003)

Phantom's Review: Well acted, with a "The Searchers" style plot. Very entertaining and Tommy Lee Jones (as usual) is awesome
