@ roshiq: Yeh I really like Pin too. Definitely an over looked gem.
Nah it's actually not. That flick is lame by the numbers "Torture Porn" bullshit and is easily one of the worst of that media dubbed subgenre IMO. Nothing everyone hasn't seen done better about a million times. Perhaps if it was released 10 years earlier it might have caused a stir but it wasn't and it just stands out as a dull straight out of the "let's flog an idea to death" cookie cutter. ------ ![]() |

Black Book (2006). This war flick on the Dutch resistance in WWII was an epic marriage of Hollywood know-how and European style. The result is a wonderfully convoluted story composed of rich characters and great production values. The acting was superb, with the lead actress delivering a believably human performance. As well, Paul Verhoeven's direction was simply a cut above his previous works. Never droopy, this flick of almost 150 minutes flies by, with a satisfying conclusion that ties up the loose threads with aplomb. Ashe.

The Monks: The Transatlantic Feedback
Really great documentary on The Monks- one of the most ahead of their time bands to ever have been lost to time. Features lots of vintage concert footage and interviews with all the band members. Fortunato- you'll love it if you haven't seen it already. |

I finally got to see A Prophet from last year. This movie has been called a landmark of French film. Its a tough prison film that can match any previous. Its a tough story of a young man sentenced to 6 years in a French prison. The story is complex and completely believable. It clocks in at 150 min. but it doesnt feel like it. No padding here. Great flick try it.

They were an awesome band. Have you heard The Deviants? They were an English group in the same vein. ----- ![]() |

Really affecting low-budget indie film chronocling a year in the lives of some ineffectual teachers, told in a documentary style. To be honest, I didn't read the description very carefully and for the first 40 minutes or so, I thought it WAS a documentary. Very convincingly depicts all the things young teachers have to learn to deal with- apathetic students, hostile students, apathetic school administration, school politics, school beaurocracy, their own shortcomings as teachers & people. Every performance is spot on- I really believed every character- all the teachers, all the students, and the script is very original. I highly recommend this for fans of small indie films. There's no action- nothing- it's all character study, but very deftly done. |
