Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans (1927)
For a director like F.W. Murnau, who created a string of masterpieces throughout his career, it's hard to say what his ultimate masterwork might be. 
I think this might be it, though. What 
Sunrise has above all others is a breathtaking simplicity, and with an unusual, terse love story it opens up an epic scope. Next to 
The Passion of Joan of Arc, it's my favorite silent film ever.
