Good point. There are a ton of countries who scream "Why wont you help us?!?!" So we send people over, then get "What the hell are you doing?!?! Get out! We dont want you!"

it's like the 3rd world is full of America's crazy ex-girlfriends....

I, for one, don't understand why the USA is always sticking their nose in other peoples' business. I say it's none of our business unless they threaten us directly. And yes, this comes from someone who used to be in the military.

Unfortunately, we tried that back before WW2. America had a ncie little policy of isolationism for a while, then the japanese saw it as a sign of weakness (i think...) and bombed the hell out of one of our naval bases.

i think the important thing is picking our battles better, like not getting involved in personal vendettas...... even if he tried to have your dad killed....

having UN backing is important. if the locals want to kill the people occupyuing their country, spread them thin. if Al Qaeda had to deal with the entire un, they would have 1 guy with a firecracker in each country.

but no matter what we do, we are screwed. what we as a country have done in thepast will always haunt us.

But see, Vod, that's where I disagree with you. You can't always say "we as a country" because not everyone in the US agrees with what the powers-that-be do. I know I don't. Most of the time, I think we should just stay out of it (whatever "it" is).

well, when it happened i of course was here. and like cheeba, i too thought it was a movie at first. i think i felt even more helpless, being an american from new york, living in a foreign country. not that i would've been able to do anything had i been in ny at the time, but still...

it's still difficult for me to even watch the images today and prefer not to. i almost lost my cousin and some friends were lost as well. and in spite of this, i can't help but have mixed feelings about the whole thing.

anyways, my thanks to all of you for not letting this topic go to the gutter and talking about it in a tasteful and calm manner, and my thoughts to everyone who was affected by this terrible day.

I actually meant the country as an entity, and we are all held responsible regardless of our personal feelings, kind of "how the world sees us", as opposed to how we feel.

Trust me, i agree with you. :) i have no use for the powers that be.

My view on our government:

say you have a convenience store. the employees are determined by the customers, essentially making the customers the boss.

now the customers hire several people to run and mind the store. pretty soon, the employees start telling the customers what they can and cannot do in the store. then they vote themselves a raise. Long ago, they forgot that they work for the customers.

No biggie. We achieved something that the governments cannot: Communication. A misunderstanding was quickly and peacefully resolved.

Had we been governemts, there would be an international incident, an assasination or emabrgo from that.
