The end of American History X took me by surprise also. Actually it took me by surprise a bit when it flashed back on Derek's crime also.

And yes, I was also taken aback by The Usual Suspects. I had read Primal Fear so I knew the twist there.

And Suspiria surprised the hell out of me.....I was not expecting what happened in the first few minutes of that film. I knew nothing about that movie before I watched it the first time.

plot-wise, I was very underwhelmed by Suspiria. The witch angle was really boring. It could've been a great surrealist horror movie if they'd just gone balls-out weird (don't give me that "The Beyond" crap, either, that movie sucked). Fantastic direction, though

EDIT: And I disagree with the studio, that movie would've been at least twice as good if they'd let Argento make the movie with 12 year olds

I love Suspira just because it is so well-made. That first death is just incredibly filmed. And I love the color and tone of the movie. But it is far from my favorite Argento film, that dubious honor goes to Tenebre.

I don't like The Beyond either; I thought I was the only horror fan that didn't.:p

no, i'm the other one ...
there is nothing about The Beyond for me and i'm a pretty broad minded horror fan. (i even bought the limited edition tin of the damn thing)

Suspira is another one i share feelings about with STE.
I can appreciate the great music and filmwork .. but the witch thing lost me. extremely not scary - and horrible makeup.

If I can step outside film - the one that still sticks with me is the ending of the graphic novel Watchmen - well the BIG ENDING. I won't give it away (although I'd recommend it to everyone) especially as a film of Watchmen is on its way. But, it made me want to run around the neighborhood screaming "HOW COOL IS THIS - HOLY SHIT!!!!!!"

Suspiria was a monumental dissappointment to me, i hated it.

However, the girl falling into the room filled with razor wire was a very noteworthy "Holy fuck" moment.

Another moment that hits me like a slap in the face every time is in American History X when the skinheads in jail teach Vinyard a "lesson"..... Even Shawshank redemption had easier to watch anal rape scenes....

The end of "Christmas Evil" (aka, "You Better Watch Out"). I was laughing hysterically... I could not beleive they would actually end a movie that way. (Guy thinks he is santa, kills four people, then drives his van off a bridge, and FLIES OFF INTO THE SKY LIKE SANTA!!!)
