I too agree with everyone's comments about being jaded, being older etc... and movies not being as scary. But sometimes I find that I can get closer to being scary when I want to be. Force myself to suspend disbelief instead of telling myself "its only a movie" I find scary movies more fun that way anyhow. Trying to think of myself as if I'm in the movie instead of just watching it helps too.

getting a little more off topic, I find a really well done score can totally take a scary movie to the next level. like suspiria that was mentioned earlier, one of the scariest sound tracks ever probably. just hearing it with out seeing the movie kinda gives me the creeps.

I agree totally. Halloween, Suspiria, The Shining and The Omen all excel in terms of the score. It makes the movie that much better and draws you into the movie. By the way, the Suspiria special edition comes with the Goblin soundtrack CD. It is brilliant.

there isnt a single movie in existance that doesnt rely on the soundtrack to get its scares ..
(except maybe blair witch ?)

which i didnt find scary either .. effective but not scary.

i think once you turn the corner nothing can scare you .. even suspending your disbelief.

its a shame though ...

Just because a movie doesn't scare you doesn't mean its bad. The Exorcist isn't scary, that doesn't mean it's not a great movie. It is. Instead of seeking out movies that will scare you, just go after the good ones. You can still appreciate stuff like quality direction, cinematography, acting, and atmosphere

Maybe you'll get your scares when you see how much $$$ they'll cost you :)

Nobody was saying these films are bad. Simply stating they're not scary, which was the topic of discussion. Each movie I mentioned ranks among my favorite movies, not just horror, but movies of all time.

I disagree somewhat. There are some horror movies where the whole soundtrack is rock music, but they still mantain a few scares. And doing it in the sndtrk and attempting it are two different things. Shining, Omen, Halloween and Suspiria are by far the best, and most effective

I only have one request.
Please stop posting these posts. How many have we had allready about "im not scared anymore, what are scray movies these days that i can watch, but they most scare me." Honestly people a truely scary movie for horror fans is a myth, a legend, the average horror fan has seen it all and will not be scared, well thats not true, i did get scared of TCM(original) fun times. But seriously no more threads like this PLEASE.

I know what you mean about the rock soundtracks .. (like Demons,.. hell like most of the newer italian horrors)
but still .. when the shocks come incidental music is playing ...
There is always a score .. as well as the soundtrack.

it will usually build, then stop dead .. just before the blast ..
It is the sudden absence of the music that builds the anticipation.

Sure there are more than the one example i stated (of movies that have found other ways to scare you) .. but not many more ..

And jumping isnt scaring .. thats startling..

The Forgotton had a moment .. holy crap .. i knew what was coming but it was so effective i jumped a foot off of my seat.
But i didnt feel fear ...

The most anxious I ever felt was during the chase at the end of TCM. It still gets me going when I watch it. I think it may be the most terrifying moment in horror. Off the top of my head anyway.

I have to say that I still get chills with certain movies...The Shining is one example. If a movie gives me chills, I'm satisfied at this point in my life.
